G I V I N G G U I D E 2015 www.HartfordBusiness.com December 15, 2015 • Hartford Business Journal 23 Ebony Horsewomen offers youth an opportunity to find themselves — to heal and grow. Animals help humans be more human, they help to develop a conscious, empathy and care about lives, especially their own. When children have been battered by environmental conditions, i.e. poverty, crime, low community pride and culture, they grow without boundaries and a sense of structure and order. When these values are introduced they fight against them as an affront to their existence. This type of disorder affects the health and the psyche (mind) of the child. He/she does poorly in school, he/she is disruptive in the community. Unfortunately, in too many cases, the parents suffer from the same conditions with the same responses. The affect of these assaults causes wide-spread damage across the entire current and future life of the child, unless interrupted and addressed. Ebony Horsewomen establishes structure and order, through animals. The farm environment demands hard work — out doors and sometimes in difficult weather. It causes youth to think and not react. These animals must be taken care of — we owe them this. Farm life develops a solid work ethic, responsibility and accountability. Farm life takes children from a sedentary existence in front of a phone or TV into real life of chores and tasks and earning privileges and not just receiving them for no apparent reason. Farm life builds the body while the animals heal the soul. Now the child has a chance to succeed. GOALS • Increase revenues and decrease expenditures • Retire horses who have served us well and need rest • Repair and refurbish the current facility to accommodate the comfort and functionality of our Animal Sciences and other classes. • Buy a tractor for farm work and snow removal • Obtain younger, fresher horses to replace the retiring ones FUNDRAISING EVENTS/OPPORTUNITIES Ebony Horsewomen, Inc. has done a Spring Festival and Country Fair 11 years in a row, in May or June; a Halloween Safe Night every year on Halloween so the neighborhood youth will have a safe place to have fun that night; and an annual Hay Appeal at the beginning of the Winter requesting donations towards food for the horses. Businesses and the public can contribute to these events through in-kind donations or cash donations. Donations can be made by mail, PayPal (through our website www. ebonyhorsewomen.us), or by cash in person. Donations may be made for a specific purpose, i.e. a new bridle for a certain horse, or as a sponsorship for a particular youth, or for general use. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Anyone can volunteer with EHI, we consistently have youth doing community service as required by the various schools, or simply volunteering to work with the animals. Adults can also volunteer, either individually, or as a group. Adults and youth may also do court-ordered community service at EHI, depending upon the offense. A call or email to our office to request the required volunteer/community service paperwork is all it takes. (Top) Members of Dressage Team at Shad derby Parade.
