G I V I N G G U I D E 2015 www.HartfordBusiness.com December 15, 2015 • Hartford Business Journal 63 Established in 1924, WACCT is a menber of the World Affairs Councils of America, a network of nearly 100 councils that together comprise the largest global affairs nonprofit organization in the U.S. WACCT hosts programs and discussions on critical global issues that impact the local community and the world at large. The Council also works with Connecticut schools to provide programs for students and educators that increase awareness of our world and the challenges facing us as global citizens. What We Do WACCT is a connector within the community, linking you to the global resources we have both here in our state and across the world. We do this in a variety of ways, including our public programs. Global Programs — International political, economic, cultural, business, and financial trends • Our programs give you unparalleled access to some of the world's most distinguished speakers: Recent speakers hosted at WACCT have included Henry Kissinger, Ambassador Ryan Crocker, Ted Turner, Red Sox President & CEO Larry Lucchino, General David Petraeus, and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. • The Council hosts a variety of programs that help the community navigate the global landscape including: Global Discussions Series, Executive Forums, business luncheons, roundtables, Global Trivia and Hot Issue Happy Hours that address the world's most critical issues. • Luminary Award: Our signature annual event honors individuals and organizations that have had a profound impact on global affairs. Education Outreach The World Affairs Council works to promote international education in CT through programs and services that provide a global perspective for students and teachers. Our flagship program is the annual Model United Nations, in which thousands of Connecticut students have particpated over the past 60 years. This interactive program calls on students to represent member U.N. countries and lets them experience the inner workings of international policy-making. A highlight is the annual trip to the U.N. WACCT also provides teacher trips abroad, workshops for students, and global curriculum development. Why World Affairs? Understanding global affairs is essential to navigating today's complex world. Global issues are local issues and the world is more connected than ever before. Whether it is unrest impacting gas prices, foreign trade regulations, global health outbreaks, terrorism or cybercrime, what happens around the world affects us all. The World Affairs Council of CT is the only institution in the greater Hartford area dedicated to this mission. FUNDRAISING EVENTS/OPPORTUNITIES The Council has a variety of ways for businesses and the public to contribute to the success of the Council and take a stand on behalf of global education in our state! • Program Sponsorship: WACCT holds between 20-30 programs each year, which cover a variety of critical global topics! There are sponsorship opportunities for each program. • Luminary Award: Each year, the Council holds its annual Luminary Award, which honors an individual or organization that has worked towards the overall betterment of the world. There are many corporate and individual sponsorship opportunities at the Luminary Award. • Model United Nations: There are opportunities to support the Council's Model United Nations program, which engages over 700 high school students from across the state! GIVING OPPORTUNITIES Individual Donations: The Council accepts general fund donations from businesses and individuals at any time! Endowment: The council is working hard on securing a solid future by building its endowment fund. We accept outright gifts as well as legacy gifts. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES We encourage the public to volunteer with our organization! WACCT volunteers help us at programs and our Model United Nations. There are a variety of projects and tasks for volunteers to engage with the Council on. We encourage volunteers to be WACCT Ambassadors to the community, letting their social networks know about the critical work the Council does!
