G I V I N G G U I D E 2015 www.HartfordBusiness.com December 15, 2015 • Hartford Business Journal 39 Vision Statement: Jewish. Community. Forever. GOALS • Strengthen nonprofit organizational capacity • Fund in-depth community needs assessment (The Jewish Hartford Indicators Project) • Expand customized individual and family philanthropic advisory services • Educate and inspire innovative and visionary philanthropy across Greater Hartford • Strenghten and enhance the vibrancy of the Jewish community of Greater Hartford • Expand and complete $40 million community wide Aim Chai endowment campaign FUNDRAISING EVENTS/OPPORTUNITIES The Jewish Community Foundation exists to strengthen the Greater Hartford Jewish community, to assist donors in fulfilling their philanthropic goals and to create lasting and meaningful impact through innovative grant making. The Foundation takes great care in our stewardship of every dollar entrusted to our care. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015, the Foundation awarded more than $4.0 million in grants representing an increase of more than $660K over the largest grant making year in the Foundation's history. The $4.0 million was comprised of 909 individual grants, also an all time record, and an increase of 20% over the prior year. These statistics can be attributed to a number of factors: the Foundation's increasing asset base; an expanded awareness and understanding of the power of endowment; and a growing belief in the ability of philanthropy to make a difference in our community. Although the Foundation and its donors make grants throughout the United States as well as for important work across the globe, $3.4 million of the total of $4.0 million in grants were awarded to programs and institutions in the Greater Hartford area ($2.41 million specifically to Jewish agencies, synagogues and students) reflecting the Foundation's primary focus on Greater Hartford. GIVING OPPORTUNITIES The Foundation celebrates and encourages choice in giving and donors have a variety of giving options: 1) designated funds are designed to endow specific institutions or programs that matter to a donor; 2) donor advised funds allow donors to make annual recommendations on organizations or programs to support and to take part in the grant making decision process along with the Foundation; 3) unrestricted funds provide general support for areas of the greatest community need, both now and in the future. Through the Aim Chai endowment campaign, donors can support the community and their own philanthropic interests in perpetuity. Every person has the potential to be a philanthropist and we welcome the opportunity to consult with individuals and families to assist in achieving their unique philanthropic goals. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES The Foundation has a variety of committees led by volunteers that help make key grant making, financial, investment and governance decisions.
