Above all, we are a community organization. Solving hunger is everybody's business, and everyone is getting involved. Your local grocery store is donating food; your neighbors are gathering in Hunger Action Teams that find innovative local solutions to poverty and hunger; the food pantry at the church down the street from you is providing job training, money coaching, and a case manager for people in need; and businesses, from downtown corporations to your local hardware store, are donating funds to make it all work. Now it's your turn. FUNDRAISING EVENTS/OPPORTUNITIES A Turkey and Thirty (November) — Foodshare's Annual Turkey and Thirty campaign benefits tens of thousands of local, working-poor families in need. A donation of a turkey and $30 ensures a traditional holiday meal as well as additional support to make it through the challenging winter months. For more information visit www.ATurkeyand30.org. Foodshare Walk Against Hunger (First Sunday in May) — This annual event attracts thousands of supporters rallying against hunger in both Hartford and Tolland counties. The Walk is Connecticut's largest anti-hunger fundraising event, and in 2015, walkers raised $636,000 for the fight against hunger. In addition to individual walkers, businesses sponsor the event and host teams. GIVING OPPORTUNITIES Each year Foodshare has an annual appeal, as well as ongoing fundraising efforts all year. We also welcome in-kind gifts of all kinds, including goods and services. Foodshare has a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, meaning, among other things, that more than 94% of the food bank's resources directly support hunger-relief programs. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Here at Foodshare, we rely on a whole community of donors, regional leaders, staff, advocates, and volunteers. In 2014, more than 6,500 individuals gave an amount of time equivalent to 27 additional full time employees. Their hard work resulted in more than 12 million meals worth of food being distributed in the most cost-effective way possible! Whatever your interest or skill, we can put it to good use. BOARD OF DIRECTORS " " I work as a crossing guard in West Hartford, and a year ago I had colon cancer. My husband left me last year when I was half way through my recovery, and it has been a struggle every day since then. I have sworn that when I am back on my feet I am going to volunteer for the Foodshare program, but until then, I can only say thank you for everything your organization has done to help me and so many others. – Susan Hodge , West Hartford Mobile Foodshare brings fresh, nutritious food directly to our hungry neighbors in 71 communities across Greater Hartford.
