Help make mental illness in children and
young adults a "mainstream health issue."
The health of young people, now and in the future,
depends on the resolve of individuals and communi es to
recognize, support, and treat mental illness as we do
other illnesses, in other words, as a mainstream health
issue.
From the me we're born we're connected to the
tradi onal healthcare system. As youngsters we receive
inocula ons to protect us from illnesses and diseases,
we're encouraged to undergo rou ne "check-ups," and
to call upon our doctor if a prolonged illness arises.
But for most people, there is li le to guide or prepare us to
respond to mental illness – un l the illness surfaces.
Half of all mental illness cases begin by age 14 and is the
number one health issue affec ng our schools today. And
with too few clinicians, help o en results in a wait of weeks
- even months - for an appointment.
Through collabora ons, including providers of health care
and mental health services, The Shine Ini a ve is changing
percep ons of mental illness. And sooner, rather than
later, we will achieve true health parity.
