Internet service to improve in Hancock and Wash. counties Verizon network operator Wireless Partners LLC announced recently that 4G LTE cellular service and high-speed Internet in all ser- vice areas in eastern Hancock and Washington counties are scheduled to be up before the end of 2015. In the fi rst phase of the expansion, Portland-based Wireless Partners will build 32 new sites with 4G LTE coverage, 13 of which will be located on newly constructed tower struc- tures. e towers will serve popula- tions that have never had access to carrier-grade, high-speed wireless mobile voice and broadband Internet service, the company said. e sites will be built along the U.S. Route 1 corridor between Ellsworth and Eastport and the Route 9 corridor between Bangor and Calais. Wireless Partners, the 20th network opera- tor in the Verizon Wireless LTE in Rural America Program, said in June it had secured a $3.4 million loan for the Downeast expansion. Net income was $4.2 million, up $80,000 or 1.9% from the third quar- ter of 2014. Earnings per common share on a fully diluted basis were 39 cents, up a penny, or 2.6%, from the same period in 2014. The Maine Department of Marine Resources in West Boothbay Harbor received a $264,516 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to support the Maine-New Hampshire Inshore Trawl Survey. The survey gathers data on the groundfi sh and lobster populations in near shore waters in the Gulf of Maine, spanning from the Massachusetts coast to the Canadian border. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded $118,838 to support East Boothbay-based Jackson Laboratory's short course on systems genetics. The merger of The Bank of Maine into Camden National Bank was com- pleted Oct. 16, making it the largest bank headquartered in Maine. The combined bank, under the Camden National Bank name, has $3.6 billion in assets, $2.4 billion in loans and $2.6 billion in deposits. Bangor Savings to sponsor UMaine women's hoops Bangor Savings Bank will be the title sponsor of the University of Maine's women's basketball team for the next three years, the university's athletic department and its mul- timedia rights holder, Black Bear Sports Properties, announced Oct. 19. As title sponsor, Bangor Savings Bank will underwrite free youth clinics overseen by the women's basketball program, support the "Bangor Savings Bank Ball Kids Program," provide T-shirts to par- ticipating girls serving as ball girls at UMaine women's basketball games and donate game tickets to local nonprofi t organizations. e bank will also donate $2 to the basketball program for every point scored by the team in the upcoming season. e press release did not specify the cost of the sponsorship. FAME bans 'one-day loans' for New Markets Tax Credit e Finance Authority of Maine voted recently to ban the use of "one-day loans" to qualify for eco- nomic development incentives under the state's New Markets Tax Credit program, two months after putting an emergency rule in place halt- ing the practice. A Maine Sunday Telegram investigation published in April highlighted the use of one-day loans in the New Markets Tax Credit program, focusing on a deal by Great Northern Paper mill's investors, Cate Street Capital. e investigation showed that the East Millinocket paper mill's investors infl ated the value of their invest- ment with a $31.8 million one-day loan and another $8.2 million that was used to pay old debts. e struc- turing of that fi nance deal allowed the investors to receive nearly $16 million in tax credits, even though none of the $40 million used to N O R T H E R N & E A S T E R N We combine our knowledge with yours to achieve success.
