Bloomfield energy lab
seeks to solve riddle of
cost vs. clean power

F
rench conglomerate Alstom,
you could say, is pragmatic.
Or you could call the com-
pany opportunistic.
The public discourse regarding
cleaner air and fewer greenhouse
gas emissions has long been domi-
nated by expensive technologies
like solar, fuel cells and wind. Even
when President Barack Obama talk-
ed about keeping electricity costs
down, his focus was on nuclear
power plants, which are relatively
inexpensive to operate but cost bil-
lions to license and build.
Alstom, though, is searching for
a better solution in Bloomfield.
