China patent granted for biotech compounds RXi Pharmaceuticals Corp., a clinical-stage biotechnology com- pany based in Marlborough, has been granted a Chinese patent for the composition and methods of use for compounds that may be used to treat dermal scarring, the company an- nounced. The patent covers RXI-109 and other connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) targeting self-deliv- ering RNAi compounds (sd-rxRNA) for the treatment of fibrotic disorders, including skin fibrosis, according to the company. These compounds may be used to treat dermal scarring, which China is a significant market for, ac- cording to RXi Pharmaceuticals. Staples completes coffee study: We need it According to a recent study, 37 percent of American workers say they can't even get dressed for work without their first cup of coffee. The survey was conducted by office supply giant Staples, based in Framingham. It found that nearly half of American workers consume at least three cups of coffee each day. In fact, 44 percent said they can't have a conversation or commute without coffee, while over 57 percent of people said they need at least two cups of coffee to feel produc- tive and alert. Sunovion and PGI Drug Discovery LLC (Psy- choGenics) will continue the agree- ment that was first started in 2007 for another four years, PsychoGenics announced. The agreement allows the companies to screen their combined compound libraries for new treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders. The collaboration has led to the identifi- cation of potential drug candidates including a compound in clinical de- velopment, according to PsychoGen- ics. Manufacturer to set up shop, add jobs in Marlborough An Acton startup that manufactures professional sports player figurines wants to move to Marlborough, ac- cording to documents submitted to the city council by Mayor Arthur Vigeant. Oyo Sportstoys, founded in 2011 by former medical device executive Tom Skripps, is planning to spend $8 million to renovate space it will lease at 111 Locke Drive. The company is seeking a tax increment financ- ing (TIF) deal from the city council, which would provide tax breaks on value added to the property over the life of the 10-year TIF agreement. The plan is to create a "state-of-the-art" manufacturing facility and corporate headquarters, according to Vigeant. Oyo would move 95 full-time jobs to the city by mid-2016, and create an additional 100 jobs over the next 10 years, he said. The data- storage powerhouse would be sold along with its subsidiary VMware to the Texas-based computer company in a deal that would eclipse the next-largest tech sale of $25 billion for Compaq Computer by Hewlett-Packard in 2002. Major questions remain for the takeover, however, including what will happen to the company's more than 9,000 employees in Massachusetts. The merged company will take EMC private, as Dell has been since 2013, although VMware will remain independent and publically traded.
