UniBank said Apple Pay is more secure than making payments with a debit card because it uses an encrypted representation of the card data instead of the card data itself. Terminals that accept contactless pay- ments read this encrypted data from the digital wallet on the user's Apple device and pass it along to Visa and UniBank. MARLB OROUGH — R Xi Pharmaceuticals Corp., a clinical- stage biotechnology company based in Marlborough, has been granted a Chinese patent for the composition and methods of use for compounds that may be used to treat dermal scarring, the company announced. The patent covers RXI-109 and other connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) targeting self- delivering RNAi compounds (sd-rxR- NA) for the treatment of fibrotic disor- ders, including skin fibrosis, according to the company. FRAMINGHAM — According to a recent study, 37 percent of the American workforce say they can't even get dressed for work without their first cup of coffee. The survey was conducted by office sup- ply giant Staples, based in Framingham. The survey found that nearly half of American workers consume at least three cups of coffee each day. In fact, 44 percent said they can't have a conver- sation or commute without coffee, according to Staples, while over 57 per- cent of people said they need at least two cups of coffee to feel productive and alert. As patients struggle to access medical care at a time and place that fits into their lives, Massachusetts laws laying out tasks that can be performed by nurse practitioners are among the country's most restrictive, health experts said dur- ing an annual health care cost trends hearing. Statistics presented by the Health Policy Commission during the hearing showed that around 60 percent of the emergency room visits made by Massachusetts residents in 2014 were by patients unable to get an appointment at a doctor's office or clinic as soon as needed. About 76 percent of emergency room visits were made after normal operating hours at doctor's offices or clinics.
