Each is independent, separately incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and governed by local volunteers. To achieve their respective community goals, United Ways partner with individuals, schools, nonprofits, businesses, financial institutions, voluntary and neighborhood associations, community development corporations, faith com- munities and government policy makers. United Ways focus on improving lives and changing community condi- tions. ey support a variety of local programs and community change initia- tives throughout the state, including a focus on the importance of positive early childhood development and experiences. Together the United Ways of Maine support two important statewide initiatives: 2-1-1 Maine and GetConnected. 2-1-1 Maine is a statewide information and referral resource of 8,000+ health and human services available through a toll- free hotline (dial 211) that connects callers to trained call specialists 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. rough GetConnected, organizations across the state may post volunteer opportunities online and individuals and groups can search for opportunities of interest. GIVING OPPORTUNITIES Each year United Ways across Maine assist hundreds of businesses with customized fundraising campaigns that make it easy and efficient to donate money to the local community through payroll deduction and direct giving. Campaigns are held at the convenience of the businesses. United Ways provide speakers to share the results of employee donations and how they help the community. United Way staff and vol- unteers manage the details of workplace campaigns, making it an easy and reward- ing experience. Contact your local United Way to find out how you can participate. Direct gifts from individuals not affiliated with a workplace are also critical to the success of United Way campaigns and are a major component of each year's local fundraising efforts. In addition, United Ways offer secure online giving opportunities via their individual websites. United Ways also host special events to raise funds and awareness, ranging from benefit concerts and auctions to e-waste disposal events and golf tournaments. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES United Ways annually mobilize thousands of volunteers through Day of Caring events and other customized volunteer opportunities, including: f CA$H Maine is collaboration of 11 statewide coalitions offers free tax preparation to quali- fied filers during the tax season and connects residents to financial education resources – financial education, home buying workshops, Family Development Accounts (FDAs) and credit counseling. Shelving and boxes are supplied to organizations, schools or workplaces along with wish lists of desired food. Food is collected and redis- tributed to local food pantries. f Volunteer Centers Housed within United Ways, volunteer centers connect people to meaning- ful volunteer opportunities, provide trainings to volunteers and volunteer managers, and track the significant investments volunteers make.
