I've seen fi rsthand how much nonprofi ts matter in the lives of all Maine citizens. ey not only educate our children, care for our most vulnerable citizens, protect the environment, support arts and culture, build aff ordable housing, develop community leaders and nurture our spirit, they also employ 84,000 Maine citizens and represent 18.9% of the state's gross domestic product. Over the past 21 years, MANP has developed into the comprehensive management support resource for Maine nonprofi ts, providing the tools, knowledge and connections they need to be eff ective and further their mission impact. In my 14 years at MANP's helm, I've been fortunate to have worked with a talented group of staff and board members to signifi cantly expand our programs and services and to position MANP as a vital resource for the nonprofi t, government and business sectors. MANP's value is refl ected in its expanding statewide membership of more than 760 nonprofi t organizations and 140 annual for-profi t supporters. Our members and supporters recognize that eff ective nonprofi t staff and board leadership and a heightened awareness of the many contributions of the sector are both critically important in ensuring the health and vitality of the people and economy of Maine. My upcoming transition has also heightened my own awareness of the rapidly changing dynamics of leadership in Maine. As we begin a process of signifi cant generational leadership transition in the state, it's beyond critical that organizations continue to develop emerging leaders, invest in their workforce and confront the challenges of attracting new talent. MANP fully recognizes that supporting eff ective leadership transitions is an investment in the future health and mission impact of nonprofi ts in their communities, and we look forward to assisting our members in eff ecting positive transitions. Maine businesses have long appreciated the role that the state's nonprofi t community plays in building a strong and sustainable economy, as communities where quality of life issues rank highly are increasingly becoming the places that people are choosing to live. As such, MANP is proud to once again collaborate with Mainebiz in highlighting the signifi cant contributions Maine nonprofi ts make to supporting our economy and fostering the values that matter most to our citizens.
