The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded $3.5 million to The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor for Alzheimer's dis- ease research and $443,490 to the University of New England in Biddeford to support neurological disorder research. The department also awarded $100,000 each to Diversion Alert in Houlton, Down East AIDS Network Inc. in Ellsworth and Maine General Medical Center in Augusta to combat opioid abuse in Maine and another $5.7 million in grant funding to support 18 health centers across Maine. Condos eyed for former Margaritas site Luxury loft-style condominiums are planned for the former Margaritas Mexican Restaurant building in downtown Portland, the Portland Press Herald reported Sept. 28. e developers, Jack Soley, a Portland Planning Board member, and his nephew Daniel Soley, submitted a subdivision application to the city to convert the second, third and fourth fl oors of the Brown Street building into four condos. e fi rst fl oor is for lease or sale as restaurant space, and Jack Soley told the newspaper there is already strong interest in the loca- tion. Margaritas had occupied the fi rst and second fl oors until it closed last month. e upper two fl oors have been vacant since the 1930s. Soley said he hopes to have the condos ready by next summer. Sanford doughnut shop opens second location Dirty Dozen Donuts, a dough- nut shop that launched in Sanford in 2012, recently opened a second location in Biddeford, the Journal Tribune reported. Owner Kelsey Quint told the newspaper she had been considering opening another store for a while, and she saw down- town Biddeford as a growing area. She plans on making the doughnuts in Sanford and delivering them to the Biddeford shop each morning. e store, at 137 Main St., was previ- ously occupied by Dahlia's Delights, a vegetarian cafe that opened in 2013 and closed in April. Two more new businesses are slated to open on the same block as the new doughnut shop, Heart of Biddeford Director Delilah Poupore told the newspaper. Biddeford once had a reputation as a gritty, blue-collar mill town that trucked in trash to burn in a down- town incinerator. Heart of Biddeford, founded in 2004, is helping transform the downtown area, where a tree- lined Main Street is today lined with a diverse mix of restaurants, galleries and shops.
