{ From The Editor }
Welcome to the fall issue of Central Massachusetts HEALTH. In
this edition, we explore two focuses: cancer care and health care
careers. I hope your perception will be challenged on both fronts in
reading the feature stories within.
For example, I've always assumed that I was unfit for a job in
health care because of my squeamishness, and I never had a knack
for biology. But it turns out that the health care sector is practically
screaming for candidates to work in non-clinical occupations, which is the subject of
our focus story on Page 16 by freelance writer Christina O'Neill. And on Page 14, local
cancer treatment experts bring us up to speed on how the approach today is more per-
sonalized than in the past, which helps patients live longer while improving their quality
of life, in a story by freelance writer Livia Gershon.
Our two other features this issue take a look at the past and the high-tech future. On
Page 18, read about how community hospitals have received a proposal by UMass
Memorial Health Care to adopt the same electronic records solution the system is
investing in, and how it could improve health care in Central Massachusetts. And on
Page 20, get a primer on the history of community health centers in Massachusetts,
and why, as the movement celebrates 50 years, they may be more relevant than ever.
Regularly featured content
Once again, we are proud to offer insight from accomplished local experts in our three
columns on benefits administration (Page 22), health care innovation (Page 23), and
consumer advice (Page 24). And Sandra Doyon, a case manager at Milford Regional
Medical Center, discusses why she shifted her clinical career path to the case manage-
ment side of patient care, in our provider profile on Page 34.
The Lists this issue provide a snapshot of the region's top hospitals, as well as colleges
and universities offering health care education programs (speaking of health care
careers). And for the latest happenings, hires, new practices and upcoming events, be
sure to glance through our briefs on Pages 6 and 7, and the Newsworthy section begin-
ning on Page 25.
Challenging perceptions
