EMHS, Bates receive $1.5 million e U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded grant funding totaling more than $1.5 million to Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems in Brewer and Bates College in Lewiston, accord- ing to a statement released Sept. 15 by U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King. e funds were respec- tively awarded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute on Aging, both DHHS agencies. A grant of $1.35 million to Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems is aimed at improving community health options in rural Maine. According to its website, EMHS in mid-2014 completed a Community Health Needs Assessment in seven counties of Maine, with the goal of build- ing work plans with partners to address fi ndings. Nearly $300,000 was awarded to Dr. Nancy Koven of Bates College, who is researching the eff ects of endogenous oxytocin in adult psychosocial adjustment. Koven is a psychologist and neuro- scientist whose research focus is the structure and function of areas of the brain involved in various cogni- tive and aff ective processes, spe- cifi cally in individuals with severe mental illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Mt. Abram ski area plans expansion e Mt. Abram ski area in western Maine plans to add six trails and cre- ate a dedicated ski racing area in its largest expansion project since the late 1970s. David Scanlan told the Portland Press Herald that creat- ing a dedicated ski racing venue is the chief impetus of the expansion project, stating it will "alleviate week- end traffi c congestion caused by race training around the main mountain." Located in Greenwood, near Bethel, Mt. Abram was founded in 1960 and has a vertical drop of 1,150 feet and 51 trails. e $150,000 expansion is part of a multi-year plan to improve the ski area, Scanlan told the newspa- per. Last year the ski area spent more than $1 million to expand its snow- making systems. In 2013, Mt. Abram received a $235,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to install solar panels, off setting 70% of its electricity usage. F.W. Webb building a showroom in Oakland F.W. Webb, a regional plumbing- and-heating supplier, has started construction of a 35,000-square-foot building off Kennedy Memorial Drive in Oakland. e building will be a distribution center and a retail showroom, Nick Pelletier, manager of the company's Augusta location, told Morning Sentinel recently. e build- ing will help expand the company's presence in the area from its smaller location in Winslow, and will include a 4,000-square-foot showroom for its commercial products such as bath- room fi ttings and plumbing, heating, cooling and ventilation equipment, Pelletier told the newspaper. F.W. Webb, based in Bedford, Mass., has 10 locations in Maine.
