18 Worcester Business Journal • Giving Guide 2015 www.wbjournal.com Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts Future Goals BIA-MA's top goals are to: 1. Diversify BIA-MA's sources of funding through incremental prevention and educational programs as well as growing our members, sponsors and donations. 2. Expand BIA-MA's reach and visibility as the state's go-to prevention, education, advocacy and support organization for brain injury survivors, families, caregivers and medical professionals. 3. Increase the general public's awareness and understanding of brain injury through the enhancement of current programs and the development of new programs. 4. Increase services and supports to those affected by brain injury through Legislative Advocacy: first, by expanding relationships with elected officials and agency directors at both state and national levels to increase awareness of the need for additional brain injury supports and funding; second, by recruiting and training additional advocates. 5. Position BIA-MA as a key provider of brain injury information and resources by partnering with hospitals, rehabilitation centers, professional organizations and human services groups. Fundraising Events/Opportunities BIA-MA has a diversified base of funding to augment state support, which accounts for 71% of our income. The largest annual fundraising event, the Annual Golf Classic, is held every June at The Haven Country Club in Boylston. This event is funded by sponsorships, cash dona- tions, raffle donations and registration of foursomes in the tournament. A new fundraising event has been added to the BIA-MA calendar, the Annual Walk & Roll for Brain Injury, which will be held every September. BIA-MA secures revenue through Educational Trainings (statewide Annual Brain Injury Conference, ABI Clinical Continuing Education Program and many other workshops and professional trainings) as well as through Prevention Programs (Ambassador, Brains at Risk, Gateway and Think A-Head Programs). Approximately 15% of BIA-MA's contributions are secured through direct mail appeals, foundation grants, individual giving (tribute and memorial gifts) and corporate/individual memberships. Volunteer Opportunities BIA-MA is enriched by a diverse volunteer team of over 35 volunteers who donated more than 1,500 hours of service in 2013-2014. To be a volunteer, it takes generosity, empa- thy, compassion, patience and dedication. In addition to our board of directors, committee members and presenters, volunteers support the organization in the following ways: • Office work (database work, filing, mailings, sorting and making packets) • Events (Annual Golf Classic, Annual Conference, Annual Walk & Roll) • Being a Legislative Advocate (help BIA-MA educate legisla- tors through written communications, email communica- tions, phone calls and testimony at public hearings, www.biama.org/currentissues) For more information or if you are interested in volunteer- ing for BIAMA, please contact Laura Mason at 508-475-0032 or email lmason@biama.org. Giving Opportunities A brain injury occurs every 13 seconds in the United States and can strike anyone, anywhere. A brain injury doesn't just affect one person, it happens to the entire community. Family, friends, teammates and co-workers are all affected by a single brain injury. Contributions provide vital funds to support our prevention, education, advocacy and support programs, which are offered to thousands of survivors, family members, athletic coaches and students across the Commonwealth. Here are a few ways for you to help BIA- MA provide a better future for brain injury survivors and their families: • Donate (www.biama.org/donate) • Become a member (www.biama.org/membership) • Become a corporate sponsor (www.biama.org/sponsor) • Sponsor our Annual events (Annual Golf Classic, Annual Walk & Roll, Annual Brain Injury Conference) For additional information, please call Chesa Conrad at 508-475-0032 or email cconrad@biama.org Board of Directors Teresa Hayes, LSW, LICSW President Nicole M.
