The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation has made investments in the Hartford Food System to support the purchase and retrofitting of a bus to serve as a mobile farmer's market in Hartford, beginning late fall 2014. This program will be jointly run with the Hispanic Health Council and will bring fresh fruits and vegetables year-round to individuals in need. The Foundation also provided a grant to Billings Forge Community Works in Hartford to support youth from the Boys & Girls Club to participate in cooking, nutrition, and gardening education at Billings Forge in September and October. Another stand-out initiative is the Foundation's mini-grant program. Established to commemorate those Harvard Pilgrim members who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, Harvard Pilgrim and the Foundation created a grants program that allows each employee to award a $500 grant, completely funded by the Foundation, to the local charity of his or her choice each year. In 2013, $550,000 was distributed through mini-grants to hundreds of nonprofit organizations in New England. This program enables employees to give and serve through company-sponsored days of volunteering. In May of this year, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care employees joined members of Hands on Hartford for an Employee Service Day at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School in Hartford. More than 30 volunteers participated, helping to build a community garden, painting educational murals, and creating resources that promote fitness and nutrition. Over the years, Harvard Pilgrim employees — along with partners/members of the business community — have contributed to hundreds of volunteer efforts including improving local schools and camps; donating clothing, school supplies and computer equipment; supporting disaster relief efforts; and serving at community organizations such as soup kitchens and shelters. In 2013, 98% of Harvard Pilgrim employees participated in at least one form of service or giving. " " H arvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation showed whole-hearted commitment to the children of Hartford when they joined us for a day of service at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School. Besides planting a community garden to grow fresh vegetables for the school food pantry, painting nutrition-themed murals, and conducting a health and nutrition workshop for students — the volunteers were enthusiastic and energetic and served as great role models, and really let the kids know how much they care. They also made a generous financial gift to the school resource center, ensuring that their commitment will have a lasting impact. – Wanda Guzman , Volunteer Coordinator, Hands On Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut boArD oF Directors Below: Students of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Hartford help plant seeds in the new community garden built at the school this spring by more than 30 volunteers from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.
