The new contract reduces that limit to five. WORCESTER — Worcester Polytechnic Institute will offer an interdisciplinary doctoral program in data science starting in the fall, a year after it launched a master's program in the growing field of study. A statement from WPI said the new program will be the first in the United States. It draws on the expertise of WPI faculty in business, computer science and mathematics, and is designed to meet a "growing demand for highly trained scientists with trans-disciplinary tech- nical and scientific expertise who can solve problems at the cutting edge of big-data analytics," the statement read. WORCESTER — The head of the Worcester Regional Transit Authority is retiring after 40 years of public service, and is being replaced on an interim basis by the transit system's assistant administrator, the WRTA announced. Stephen O'Neil announced his retirement to the WRTA's advisory board, the agency said in a statement. The assistant administrator, Tom Coyne, will take over as interim admin- istrator as of Aug. 7, the statement read. The statement cited several accomplishments by O'Neil during his eight years in the role, notably seven consecutive years of a balanced budget, elimination of debt, increased rider- ship and construction of a $14-million, state-of-the-art hub next to Union Station. MARLB OROUGH — Boston Scientific saw its operational revenue and profits rise in the second quarter. The results were at the upper end of the company's guidance range. Operational revenue grew 6 percent, to $1.84 billion during the quarter, which ended June 30. But for its reporting with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, revenue declined 2 percent, which the statement attributed to foreign curren- cy fluctuations. Boston Scientific had expected revenue of between $1.8 and $1.85 billion. WORCESTER – Fallon Health will cut 45 jobs as the health insurance provid- er shuts down its Fallon Total Care program this September. A spokes- woman for Fallon confirmed that it had informed state labor officials in a filing that it would cut 45 jobs. The exact number of jobs that will be lost will not be known until the program officially ends, as the company works to find other positions for affected employees, spokeswoman Carrie Wattu said. "We're providing additional sup- port for those employees who need help transitioning to other internal and external positions," she said. WORCESTER — The YMCA of Central Massachusetts will make improve- ments at five branches, using money from the state's finance and develop- ment agency, MassDevelopment. e agency issued the YMCA a tax-exempt bond of $22.7 million for the work, the two organizations said. e plans in- clude the following: a 14,000-square- foot aquatic center at the Boroughs Family branch in Westborough; a 2,000-square-foot splash pad play area at the Greendale Family Branch in Worcester, and a 3,000-square-foot amphitheater and septic system up- grade at Camp Lowe in Lancaster. e projects are expected to create 26 jobs and support 47 construction jobs. Connecticut-based United Bank, which has seven branches in Central Massachusetts, reported record earn- ings in its second quarter, helped by a 19-percent jump in commercial lend- ing and an increase in home loans. United's parent, United Financial Bancorp, brought its second-quarter net income back into the black amid skyrocketing second-quarter demand for its home and business loans.
