Two of the state's oldest institutions—Maine Historical Society and Portland Public
Library—have joined forces in an innovative marriage. Running out of collections space
on Congress Street, the two non-profits jointly purchased connected buildings on Riverside,
in a deal that takes collaboration to a new level.

"MHS and PPL came together to solve a problem neither could have solved on their
own. They contributed equally to the purchase, renovations, and fundraising to
pay for the deal," said Boulos' Nate Stevens, who worked closely with Steve
Podgajny and Steve Bromage—directors of PPL and MHS, respectively. "They
are sharing resources in a unique model for deep collaboration that may be a
first in the non-profit world."
"It's a case of two old guard institutions reinventing themselves, staying nimble,
and serving the public," said Steve Podgajny. "The new annex frees up prime
real estate that both PPL and Maine Historical will use to create inspiring cultural
spaces, contributing to a more vibrant downtown."
