www.wbjournal.com June 8, 2015 • Worcester Business Journal 3 Family-run businesses in the United States are as old as the U.S. itself. ey were more pronounced during the first 150 years after the Revolutionary War, given that ours was a largely agrarian economy during the 19th century. e Industrial Revolution began to change that. ere's also, it seems, less of a desire to foist the family business onto the next generation. A study conducted last year by Big Four firm PricewaterhouseCoopers found that only 40 percent of family-run businesses around the world intend to pass the baton of management to the next generation. Meanwhile, 20 percent plan to sell, up slightly from a previous survey in 2012. Certainly, there are challenges to running a family business. In this issue, starting on Page 12, read how five families in Central Massachusetts — this year's honorees of our seventh annual Central Mass. Family Business Awards — make both family and business work. Also, in this issue's Knowhow article, on Page 27, read David Kowal's amusing take on five business clichés that should be dumped from everyday usage. I laughed for several minutes when I read the original version; hope you do the same with the final product. ~ Rick Saia (rsaia@wbjournal.com) This Week In The WBJ Editor, Rick Saia, rsaia@wbjournal.com Web Editor/Columnist Christina H.
