Bar Harbor Chamber names new leader e Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce has named a former Eastern Maine Development Corp. employee as its new executive director. e Mount Desert Islander reported that Nancy McKechnie started on May 25. She most recently served as EMDC's deputy director of workforce development. McKechnie possesses a "breadth of knowledge," as well as an "excitement, creativity and passion for our region," said Stacey Smith, the chamber's president. "Nancy has spent a great deal of time in and around Bar Harbor, beginning with time spent on Swan's Island during her youth." Flatbread Co. to open second Maine location e Flatbread Co. is planning to expand its Maine footprint beyond Portland, with a new restaurant slated to open in Rockport this summer. e Courier-Gazette reported that the piz- zeria is scheduled to open at the former Cody's Original Roadhouse building at 399 Commercial St. on July 1. e news was confirmed by the building's owner, Allen Mitchell. Founded in Amesbury, Mass., the Flatbread Co. has independently-owned restaurants in Portland, North Conway, N.H., and 10 other locations. Bangor Region Chamber CEO to step down Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce CEO and President John Porter has announced that he plans to step down this August to take a new job. Porter said in a May 20 email to chamber members that he has accepted a posi- tion with MaineHealth in Portland as a system director for marketing and communication. His last day is Aug. 28, which he said will give him to time "to say a proper farewell." "I want you to know now just how grateful I am for the opportunity given to me to try to make a difference for this wonder- ful community," Porter said. Chamber board Chairwoman Renee Kelly is expected to begin the search process for Porter's successor soon, Porter said, adding that he's "confident that with a terrific board and an outstanding staff, the chamber will continue to thrive." Cross Insurance acquires Rhode Island agency Bangor-based Cross Insurance has acquired a full-service insurance agency in Rhode Island, expanding its reach in southern Rhode Island and south- eastern Connecticut. e independent insurance company announced May 19 that it bought Schonning Insurance of Westerly, R.I., for an undisclosed price. Schonning Insurance will retain its six employees, including President Stephen Schonning, but the agency will eventually transition and operate under Cross Insurance's brand. "We are happy to welcome Schonning Insurance, a renowned family-owned agency, into the Cross Insurance family of agencies," Royce Cross, CEO of Cross Insurance, said in a prepared statement. "With this acquisition, we greatly enhance our service offerings throughout the states of Rhode Island and Connecticut."
