The company's assets are approaching $1 billion. MEMIC is rated A (Excellent) by A.M. Best and has earned accolades across the industry for its efforts in technology and customer service. Back home in Maine, the company remains a pillar of the local business community and has received count- less awards for its efforts in economic development, business leadership, social responsibility, ethical leader- ship and, of course, workplace safety. The MEMIC Harvey Picker Horizon Scholarship is awarded annually to the child of an injured worker whose family's ability to pay for college has been sig- nificantly impacted by the worker's injury. To date, the company has made scholarship awards totaling nearly $100,000. Membership organizations include the Greater Port- land Chamber, Maine Chamber of Commerce, the New England Council, Maine Businesses for Sustainability, and the Safety and Health Council of Northern New England. MEMIC is also a member of national insurance trade organizations which help to foster good public policy that serves its policyholders. Employees at MEMIC are also involved members of their local communities. MEMIC encourages this in- volvement by example and by getting behind efforts to raise funds and help local communities. Chief among these efforts is its annual United Way campaign. Annu- ally, MEMIC's employees pledge more than $50,000 to the local United Way. In addition, employees have led efforts to raise funds for organizations such as the local chapter of the American Heart Association, the National Kidney Foundation, the Red Cross and many others. Employees in the home office in Portland raise thousands of dollars each year for "Strike Out Cancer in Kids," a fundraiser for the Maine Children's Cancer Program.
