Grant recipients have an opportunity to transform how primary care practices operate and to drive im- provements that can positively impact not only Har- vard Pilgrim members, but also all of their patients. The results of the grant programs are shared with other Harvard Pilgrim providers at regular meetings so that "best practices" can benefit a broader patient population. The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation pro- vides the tools, training and leadership to help build healthy communities. Since its inception more than 30 years ago, the Foundation has awarded more than $100 million to programs that support healthy eating and active living for children and families, enrich local schools, care for the homeless, clean the environment and make health care more equitable. In fact, in 2011 alone, the Foundation awarded more than $1.3 million in grants to almost 1,000 not-for- profit organizations in Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Of Harvard Pilgrim's 1,100 employees, 98% participated in some form of giving through volunteer- ing, the Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grants program, and the annual employee fundraising campaign. In Maine, more than $9,000 in mini-grants was distributed to non-profit organizations in communities throughout the state. As part of the Foundation's 30th anniversary cel- ebration, Harvard Pilgrim employees chose to donate $10,000 to Camp Sunshine in Casco. Over the years, many Harvard Pilgrim employees have also volun- teered for service days at Camp Sunshine to help get the camp ready for the hundreds of children with life- threatening illnesses and their families who visit free of charge each summer. Additionally, The Foundation's Growing Up Healthy initiative supports programs that help prevent childhood obesity. Working with the Let's Go! 5-2-1-0 Goes to School program, more than 112,000 elemen- tary school-aged children ate better and moved more through grants to 21 schools in Greater Portland and Somerset and York Counties, as well as through train- ing for local school nutrition directors. The Foundation's Culture InSight program will also help 20 Maine communities better prepare to serve mi- nority and immigrant populations through the launch of the Hanley Center's Health Leadership Development Alumni Ambassador Program in Portland. The pro- gram will implement projects across the state with a primary focus on reducing health disparities. Harvard Pilgrim further supports its mission — to improve the quality and value of health care for the people and communities it serves — with participation on state government committees and sponsorship of key community events. * NCQA's Private Health Insurance Plan Rankings, 2011-12 HMO/POS.
