MARLBOROUGH — A new study has affirmed encouraging results for treat- ing macular degeneration using Ocata Therapeutics' stem-cell line RPE, or retinal pigment epithelium, the com- pany reported. Formerly Advanced Cell Technology, Ocata said treatment with the fully differentiated cells had posi- tive results in Asian patients in a South Korean study. The new research, Ocata said, supports earlier findings reported in October. The Korean study has been published online in Stem Cell Reports. It features 12 months of post-transplant follow-up data from four Asian patients; two with Stargardt's macular degenera- tion (SMD) and two with dry age- related macular degeneration (AMD). PETERSHAM — Plans are moving for- ward for Heywood Healthcare of Gardner to open an in-patient facility that would provide detox and behav- ioral care services at the Sisters of Assumption property in Petersham. The town's Zoning Board of Appeals voted unanimously to grant Heywood a special permit for the project, known as the Quabbin Retreat. Heywood can now pursue permitting, licensing, pur- chase and development of the property, according to a statement from Heywood spokeswoman Marissa Torres. The 21-acre property is located on North Main Street (Route 32). FRANKLIN — Dean College and the owners of the New England Patriots and New England Revolution are creat- ing a program that will give students access to the teams' executives and operations as part of their education. The college and The Kraft Sports Group, which owns the teams, announced the formation of The Center for Business, Entertainment and Sport Management, which will offer students insight from team executives. The Kraft group said this enhances a relationship the two organizations launched in 2009. Patriots and Revolution executives will participate with members of the Dean faculty in classroom activities. This will cover programs that include arts and entertainment management, business, media studies and communications, security management, sport manage- ment and sports and fitness studies. SOUTHBOROUGH — Southborough- based manufacturer Sevcon said it's looking to beef up its staff by 20 after the maker of controls for electric and hybrid motor vehicles received a grant to develop a new range of products. Sevcon said it received 400,000 British pounds, or more than $600,000, from a fund sponsored by the U.K. govern- ment to develop the next generation of the company's Gen4 controller. The low-voltage controller will provide additional functionality and deliver improved performance, exceeding the emerging environmental and regulato- ry benchmarks in smaller dimensions than its predecessor, Sevcon said in a statement. WESTBOROUGH — Kopin Corp. reported an 83 percent year-over-year growth in revenue as a result of strong military orders. First-quarfer revenue for the developer of wearable technol- ogy was $8.6 million, compared to $4.7 million for the first quarter of 2014.
