In 1900, a group of Worcester parents founded Bancroft with the idea of creating a progressive institution that fostered academic, personal and social development. Today, those goals remain intact, along with Bancroft's mission to help students "embrace the moral and ethical challenges of being lifelong learners, teachers of others, and citizens of the globe." In Bancroft's diverse, safe, sup- portive community students encourage each other to reach for personal excellence in academic, artistic and athletic pursuits. Bancroft's award winning sports teams, robotics teams, speech team, musical ensembles and stage performances give all students a chance to discover their strengths and passions. The entire Worcester region is an extension of the Bancroft campus. Upper School science students spend time in the research laboratories of UMass Medical School. Sixth graders travel throughout the Blackstone Valley learning the history, culture and ecology of this region and the vital role it played in the industrial revo- lution. The Bancroft experience includes a variety of pro- grams in keeping with its commitment to advancing goodness and fostering cultural awareness in our stu- dents. Graduating seniors participate in a Senior Cooperative program — an immersive, real-world work experience in one of 20 different citywide non-profit agencies, ranging from cancer laboratories to Audubon properties to legal offices. Middle School students volun- teer at local food banks, nature preserves and other charitable organizations, and raise funds for interna- tional organizations such as Doctors without Borders. Lower School students collect coats, mittens and books for needy children in the community. By being a "good neighbor" within the Worcester and Central Mass community, Bancroft teaches by example. The School enjoys a strong relationship with the neigh- boring Greendale YMCA and the City of Worcester, helping to maintain and beautify Shore Park. Bancroft's Worcester City Scholars Program, nearing its 20th anni- versary, provides scholarships for bright and talented students from Worcester who would otherwise lack the financial resources to attend Bancroft. Since 2003, the Worcester Partnership between Bancroft School and Worcester's inner-city Elm Park Community School has brought first through seventh graders from Elm Park to campus for a four-week summer enrichment session, staffed by Bancroft faculty. The School is also home to the Worcester Journal, a literary magazine for young writers, donates used computers, and opens its facilities for annual events such as the Scleroderma and Arthritis walks and the Special Olympics State Games. Many Bancroft Upper Schoolers volunteer their Saturdays with local students who have special needs through the CARE and Horizons Programs on campus. Global citizenship is also a key part of Bancroft's mis- sion. The Bancroft curriculum offers a variety of world languages starting in Lower School. The School has active exchange programs with schools in France, Spain and China, and sponsors student tours to a variety of world destinations — recent examples being Italy, France, England, Spain and Costa Rica — that tie in with arts, languages and history studies.
