Presque Isle manufacturer seeks $3M expansion A Presque Isle-based manufacturer that is considered one of the world's largest makers of orthodontic appliances is seeking to make a $3 million expan- sion and hire 23 more workers. e Presque Isle Star-Herald reported that Acme Monaco is seeking to partially fund that expansion with a Community Development Block Grant application for $690,000 that is being submitted on the city's behalf. e company is proposing to create 23 new jobs if the grant is approved by the state. Naturally Potatoes' $7.5M expansion nearly done Pineland Farms Naturally Potatoes has nearly fi nished its $7.5 million expansion in Mars Hill. Rodney McCrum, the company's president and chief operating offi cer, told the Presque Isle Star-Herald that the expansion is almost 95% completed. He added that the company has hired 40 full-time workers since last August to support its continuing growth. Google contest chooses Orono startup as fi nalist Google has named the CEO of Orono-based Cerahelix as a fi nalist in the technology giant's "Solve for X," a worldwide competition aimed at solv- ing global issues. e Portland Press Herald reported that Susan MacKay was among four fi nalists chosen from a pool of 76 applicants at Google's East Coast fi nals in February. e winners will be named after Google completes fi nals in 10 other regions across the globe. Google chose MacKay as a fi nalist for her com- pany's fi ltration device that recycles industrial waste water using DNA- sized pores. Bangor drive-in dating to the 1950s to reopen A local real estate agent is helping to reopen a Bangor drive-in theater that closed in 1985 and was fi rst opened by her father more than 64 years ago. e Bangor Daily News reported that Carol Epstein and business partner Joe O'Donnell of Boston-based Belmont Capital are reopening the Bangor Drive-In on July 1 through Cinema Bangor LLC, which owns the Bangor Mall Cinema. Contract may spur hiring spree at Caribou fi rm Virtual Managed Solutions, a soft- ware support and IT company in Caribou, may hire an extra 65 to 100 employees by next year if a new contract with a client works out. C.B. Smith, the company's CEO, told the Aroostook Republican & News that the company may start a hiring spree by the third quarter of this year after one of VMS' hotel clients told him that it anticipates an increased demand in service. To prepare for the potential hiring spree, VMS is working with the town of Caribou to apply for a Community Development Block Grant that could help the company obtain more equipment and working capital. VMS' client has yet to make a fi nal decision on what would drive the hiring spree and allow the CDBG process to continue.
