But stake- holders nationwide will also watch how the project plays out, said Denis Leary, executive director of Veterans Inc., a Worcester-based nonprofit that serves veterans at risk for home- lessness. Leary said medical school chancellor Michael Collins and Col. John Collins, regional director of the VA Central Western Massachusetts Health Care System, have drafted a viable proposal to build a VA treat- ment facility large enough to accom- modate Worcester County's sizeable veteran population. The proposed project would include a new, 100,000-square-foot building would house a research annex and poten- tially replace the VA's Community Based Outpatient Clinic on Lincoln Street. WORCESTER — UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC) has posted a $29-million operating surplus for fiscal 2014, according to an audited report the Worcester-based health care system released. The operating surplus represents a turnaround from 2013, when UMMHC reported an operating loss of $55 million for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2013. According to UMMHC, payments increased in fiscal 2014, rising to $2.25 billion, compared with over $2 billion in fiscal 2013. The system's net profit totaled $60.8 million in fiscal 2014, including investment income. That's down from $72.9 million last year, as UMMHC spent $16.4 million on reducing its work- force. FITCHBURG — Micron Products of Fitchburg has signed an exclusive manufacturing agreement for New Era Orthopaedics knee, hip and spine implant systems. Under the five-year agreement, Micron Products will manufacture FDA- approved orthopedic implants, with orders set to begin being filled in the second half of 2015. New Era is based in Pennsylvania and specializ- es in primary joint replacement and spine implants. Micron is a wholly- owned subsidiary of Arrhythmia Research Technology Inc. WORCESTER — Community Healthlink and UMass Memorial Health Care are among 10 organi- zations sharing $1.3 million in grants under a new program admin- istered by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation. The program, Fostering Effective Integration of Behavioral Health and Primary Care, will support organiza- tions that treat people who have behavioral health problems and other medical issues. The foundation said it looked for organizations with collaborative, co-located and inte- grated service models for patients with a range of medical and behav- ioral health needs, including support for their families. WORCESTER — Generex Biotechnology Corp. of Worcester, a developer of drug delivery technol- ogy, said it has entered into an agreement with Canadian medical marijuana development firm CannScience Innovations Inc. to license its drug delivery system for delivery of medical marijuana prod- ucts. According to a statement, CannScience is developing a product pipeline of proprietary drug, device and delivery technologies. On Nov. 18, CannScience entered into a non- binding letter of intent to lease Generex's proprietary RapidMist drug delivery technologies to be used in oral delivery of its medical marijuana products. MARLBOROUGH — Marlborough- based biotechnology firm RXi Pharmaceuticals said three-month observations have confirmed the effectiveness of its first product can- didate, RXI-109, in the treatment of post-surgical scars. The results show that when RXI-109 is delivered two weeks after scar-revision surgery, evaluators are better able to identify the area of the scar treated with RXI-109. This supports RXi's deci- sion to deliver treatment two weeks after surgery, rather than the acute inflammatory phase of the healing process, according to a statement. MILFORD — Edward J. Kelly, presi- dent of Milford Regional Medical Center, will also become CEO of the health care organization in 2016, Milford Regional announced.
