Here's to your HEALTH!
T
he publishers of the Worcester Business Journal are proud to introduce
Central Massachusetts HEALTH, a new quarterly magazine covering all
aspects of health care in the region.
We all know that the health care industry is undergoing a massive transfor-
mation today on how health care is being delivered. The good news for all of us in
Central Massachusetts is that health care is far and away our top employment sector,
generating more revenue than any other industry and driving the economic engine in
our region. Combine that strength with an aging population and it's safe to assume that
health care services will expand even further in Central Massachusetts.
With the health care industry undergoing significant change and with a rapidly shifting landscape presenting
both opportunities and threats to thousands of providers and customers, it's apparent that both groups are chal-
lenged to keep up with what it all means.
Navigating the evolving health care system remains challenging and complex, and there has never been a
single regional resource that has tried to report regularly on it and make sense of it all for those in the industry
or those who consume those services. Our goal is to make Central Massachusetts HEALTH a resource that can
deliver a whole new level of informed coverage of the region's health care industry, delivering value to health
care professionals, businesses and consumers. As publishers of the Worcester Business Journal, we are experi-
enced at delivering targeted, niche publications, and we hope we can provide that same kind of value with the
debut of Central Massachusetts HEALTH.
Given our work over the last several months in interviewing many health care industry professionals, senior
managers and consumers about where they get their information, we've learned much about the marketplace
interest in health care news and analysis. As we launch Central Massachusetts HEALTH and our weekly
e-newsletter, Central Mass Health Care, we look forward to delivering quality content that our readers and
advertisers will be proud of. Please let us know what you think of this new publication, what we ought to be
covering in future issues and where you'd like to see it be made available.
Thanks in advance for your interest and your feedback – enjoy!

W
e're lucky to be surrounded by world-class health care institutions and
companies that are on the leading edge of treatment, research and
policy making in Central Massachusetts, and I'm excited to include
many expert sources from these organizations in our inaugural issue of
Central Massachusetts HEALTH.
Stitched into these pages, you'll find features that examine how innovation, technol-
ogy and changing policy are shaping health care for professionals and consumers alike.
Each issue will delve into at least one focus area; this edition has two: Aging in America
and rehabilitation and sports medicine.
Our cover story on Page 14 presents the fiscal realities of financing long-term care in the later years, as well
as social factors that influence the economics of elderly living. Turning to rehab and sports medicine, our fea-
ture on Page 18 explores alternative medicine for sports-related injuries, and the state of insurance reim-
bursement for such treatments.
Our other two features shed light on how the rise in risk-based insurance contracts are changing the
patient experience (Page 20), and how researchers are trying to knock down financial roadblocks to bringing
life-saving gene therapies to market (Page 16).
Every issue of Central Massachusetts HEALTH will also include a profile of a local health care professional,
and columns contributed by local experts. In addition, you'll be treated to an insightful sampling of health care
data and graphics, plus business briefs, photos and new hires and practices, in every issue.
We welcome your feedback, as well as your ideas. In the meantime, enjoy this debut issue in good health!
