Cole noted that other insurers offer discounts for the service, but not full coverage. Once members have exhausted their standard acupuncture benefit of 20 visits per year, they can continue getting acupuncture through the dis- counted program; Harvard Pilgrim also offers discounts of between 10 and 30 percent on a number of non- traditional therapies, including Tai Chi, yoga, Ayurvedic medicine and massage. Cole pointed out that acupuncture is recommended for low back pain, osteoarthritis in the knee, headaches and other conditions. "Those with sports injuries tend to look at chiro- practic or physical therapy, but acu- puncture can make a difference," Cole said. HPHC's network includes 283 acu- puncturists in its coverage area:, which includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. "Hopefully, other insurers will follow suit," Cole said. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, the state's largest com- mercial insurer, also covers massage when provided by participating physi- cal therapists, chiropractors, physiat- rists, osteopaths and physicians. "Regarding other services, each indi- vidual's unique clinical circumstances may be considered and we would work with their physician to evaluate the request," said Jenna McPhee, a spokes- woman for Blue Cross. Like Harvard Pilgrim subscribers, Blue Cross members can get discounts of up to 30 percent on alternative ser- vices from in-network providers. Reid, of Orthomed, said that the combination of traditional and non- traditional medicine offers the best therapy for the "whole individual." As consumers are starting to embrace that integrated approach, Reid said she hopes more insurers will realize the cost effectiveness of non-traditional therapies, like medi- cal massage.
