B I Z 7 M A R C H 2 3 , 2 0 1 5 Hannaford names new president Hannaford Supermarkets has named a senior executive from its parent company as its next president, who will take over when Brad Wise retires this summer. e Scarborough-based regional supermarket chain recently announced that Michael Vail, cur- rently the chief merchant and supply chain officer for Hannaford parent Delhaize America, will succeed Wise, who is stepping down June 30. "Brad's announcement of his retirement marks a transition in his distinguished and successful career with our com- pany," Kevin Holt, chief executive officer of Delhaize America, said in a prepared statement. "During the next few months, Brad and Mike will work together to develop a smooth transi- tion plan to ensure the continued for- ward momentum of our Hannaford strategic plan." Suffolk Downs sues Maine off-track betting parlors e owner of Suffolk Downs, a Boston race track, is suing the own- ers of off-track betting parlors in Scarborough and Sanford, alleging they owe more than $400,000 for unpaid bets, commissions and fees. e Bangor Daily News reported that Suffolk Downs filed a complaint against the owner of Scarborough Downs seeking payment of $180,000 and a separate complaint against the owner of a Sanford OTB operation seeking nearly $240,000. Portland attorney Edward MacColl told the newspaper that Scarborough Downs disputes the amount Suffolk Downs alleges it owes and that he had not yet seen the complaint filed against the Sanford facility, and therefore could not comment on it. Redfin debuts brokerage service in southern Maine Seattle-based real estate brokerage Redfin announced on March 12 the debut of its home-buying and sell- ing services in southern Maine. e Redfin model combines advanced technology with full-service local agents who are paid salaries rather than commissions, receive benefits and earn bonuses based on customer satisfaction, according to a press release announcing the company's entry into the southern Maine real estate market. All reviews for every Redfin agent are published on their online profiles. Redfin agents will be available to help people buy and sell homes in Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Kennebunk, Biddeford, Augusta and the Lakes Region. Redfin's website and mobile apps now include all agent-listed homes for sale in those areas, the release stated. L.L.Bean sets goal of 100 retail stores by 2020 L.L.Bean Inc. recently told employees in a memo that it plans to quadruple the number of retail stores by 2020, adding to its catalog and online shop- ping experiences. e Bangor Daily News reported that President and CEO Chris McCormick told work- ers in a memo on March 11 that the company will open four new stores this year — adding to its 26 full- price retail stores and 10 outlet stores nationwide — and will accelerate the pace of the retail expansion to reach the goal of having "at least 100" stores by 2020. L.L.Bean also has 20 stores in Japan and about 50 locations in China, although most are depart- ments within other stores. N.J. educator named as USM's president Harvey Kesselman, currently the provost and executive vice president of Stockton University in Pomona, N.J., was named president of the University of Southern Maine, James Page, chancellor of the University of Maine System, said. A first-gen- eration college graduate who pro- gressed to doctorate in education as a non-traditional student, Kesselman has been responsible for a $75 mil- lion operating budget at Stockton University, which has 800 employ- ees and 8,600 students. In his 35 years with that university, he also has served as a dean and professor in the school of education, interim vice president for administration and finance and vice president for student affairs, among several other positions.
