The Connecticut Department of Energy & Envi- ronmental Protection is running EV Connecticut, an incentive program to encourage municipalities and businesses to install electric vehicle charging stations. In increasing the number of charging stations state- wide, DEEP hopes to alleviate range anxiety for current and potential electric vehicle owners. The state set an initial goal to invest $200,000 through individual grants up to $5,000 to increase the then 81 publicly available charging stations to 200 by the end of 2013. After awarding two rounds of grants in November and a third in February, the state has spent more than $200,000, but the number of charging stations sits at 160. Ingalls said DEEP did not do enough to promote EV Connecticut, causing it to stall out and fail to meet its ini- tial deadline. Besides the two in its showroom, CT Electric Car has not done any external electric vehicle charger projects since December, when it installed two units at South Windsor solar company All-Phase Electric Supply. All-Phase manager Jake Scavone chose to install the chargers due to his company's commitment to green technology and the large proportion of his customers with electric cars. While the station is up and running, Scavone said working with DEEP was a painful experi- ence, and he has yet to receive the grant money he was awarded in December. Further- more, Scavone said obtaining the required street signage to advertise the chargers at his business has been unneces- sarily difficult, revealing a lack of communica- tion between CT Electric Car parenT Company: Newington Electric HeadquarTerS: Newington number oF eV CHarGerS in CT: 40 number inSTaLLed THrouGH proGram: 7 FaST FaCT: Offers turnkey installation, does all wiring and installing in-house.
