LoCaTion: South Windsor TiTLe: President, Co-owner Company: A&B Cooling & heating Corp. Formed: 1973 Web: www.abcoolingandheating.com inFo: Wanegar learned about geothermal at a Connecticut Light & Power seminar in the mid-90s. "you take heat out of the ground, you put it back in. you're not burning anything. The idea clicked!" Tapping the Earth By michele DeLima G uy Wanegar is on a mission — to enliven awareness and demand for geothermal HVAC. Using underground piping, geothermal HVAC systems use Earth's constant underground temperature to produce com- fortable heating and cooling for homes and buildings. "Geothermal's biggest benefit? Saving consumers up to 60 percent on their ongoing energy costs compared to oil or propane," Wanegar said. "The 30 percent tax break on instal- lations is also a big plus." Wanegar designs, builds, and installs geothermal HVAC systems for residential and commercial customers, and in 2010, he became the first president of the Connecticut Geothermal Association. In that role, he advocates for build- ers to use more geothermal in their projects and for the Con- necticut General Assembly to treat geothermal like any other renewable energy source. "As busy as Guy is, he helped me design control circuits for a complicated residential system in Maine," said Woodie Weiss, chair of the Madison Energy & Efficiency Committee. "Guy taught me everything I needed to know." Green Fact: For every unit of electricity used, geothermal hVAC yields five units of heat or cooling. sourCe: naTional GeoGraPhiC 16 ConneCTiCuT Green Guide • Fall 2014 www.CTGreenGuide.com GrEEn WArrior: Guy WAnEGAr PhoTo | PaBlo roBles
