Nothing is more important to the architectural firm that began its roots in the basement of a Long island home and is now a thriving presence in West Hartford. Michael B. Herlands, AiA, is the firm's founder and one of its two principals. As Michael explained it, what has set his firm apart over the past four decades is this simple yet powerful philosophy: "Focus first on doing the job right and then success will follow." "it's more important for the project to be done the right way," said Herlands. "e right way is when both the client and we are happy with the results. if the final design solution doesn't satisfy us then we're not happy even if the client is. We are the biggest critics of our work." "Our passion is oen what separates us from our contemporaries. it makes us want to get more out of the design solutions. Because of that, we really push the envelope. How many people enjoy going to work? How many people do you think love what they do? i never know what the day is going to bring. it's a challenge that brings great joy and a love for Architecture," he said. Nicholas P. Michnevitz iii, AiA, is MBH's other principal. "We are honestly passionate about doing architecture. We are still running a business but architecture comes first. Detail & design and making clients happy are rule number one. e business side takes a back seat. We'd like to make a profit but it is more important to make sure the job is done right and that is what reaps other benefits down the road," said Michnevitz.
