Celebrating 140 Years • The Hartford Club 3 Celebrating 140 years O n behalf of the members and Board of Governors of e Hartford Club I want to thank the Hartford Business Journal for preparing this wonderful publication. e elegant and formidable outside of e Hartford Club has been visible at its current Prospect Street location since 1904. at may be why Hartford's largest city club is oen stereotyped as a traditional enclave of privilege. Perhaps there are clubs out there where that picture is true. But that's not what's happening at e Hartford Club. e purpose of a club, aer all, isn't to serve meals and cocktails. It's to bring together like-minded people. In this case, that means people who want to help the Hartford area and who are in positions to do something about it. As with most organizations — public, private or non- profit — the economic difficulties of the last five years have posed challenges for e Hartford Club. Yet, true to its history of being a place that cultivates innovative thinkers, the club is being proactive and creative in overcoming those obstacles. Also true to its character, many of the things the club is doing include reaching out to the community, to involve even more people and organizations with the club's success. e Hartford Club has undergone many changes in the past 140 years, but it continues to be the center of the city where business and civic leaders meet. e club is and will continue to be an integral part of this growing community. e City of Hartford has also changed significantly in the past 140 years. e east end of downtown is rapidly expanding following the development of Adriaen's Landing to include the Convention Center and the CT Science Center. Recently Front Street has become the city's entertainment district and in several years we will have the downtown campus of the University of Connecticut as our neighbor. Further, e Hartford Club will be a key component of the city's iQuilt project. e Hartford Club is in the middle of all of this development and is well positioned to continue to be an integral part of Hartford's business, cultural and social scene. I want to extend my thanks to the members and to the Board of Governors who work tirelessly to support e Hartford Club. We are an open, inclusive club and we welcome everyone to visit and consider membership. — Larry C.
