7 6 H a r t f o r d The Wadsworth Atheneum was the first public art institution in the United States. It was also the first museum in America to begin collecting contemporary American art — resulting in a world-renowned Hudson River School collection. Also among its firsts was the first museum to stage a retrospective of Pablo Picasso in America and also the first museum to have its own theater, which is still actively used today. Top: Avery Court at the Wadsworth during the day is a quiet spot for artistic introspection but is a popular social setting in the evening for various charities and functions. Bottom: The Morgan Great Hall — previ- ously home to the Wadsworth's collection of American history paintings displayed salon-style — has been reinstalled for the first time with large-scale works from the museum's Contemporary art collection. wadsworth atheneum/allen phillips leonard hellerman
