1 5 2 H a r t f o r d The Institute of Living The Institute of Living is Hart ford Hospital's Div ision of Psychiatr y. The Institute was one of the f irst mental health centers in the United States — and the f irst hospital of any kind in Connecticut. Today, it is a leader in patient care, research and education in the fields of behavior- al, psychiatric and addic- tion disorders. The Institute was named one of the top-ranked psychiatric facilities in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and was the first in Connecticut to offer transcra- nial magnetic stimulation therapy for the treat- ment of depression. The Transplant Program Hartford Hospital is one of only two transplant centers in Connecticut and the only hospital in the state offering ventricular assist device destination therapy, another option for patients with advanced heart failure. Hartford Hospital's first kidney trans- plant was performed on March 25, 1971. As the technology and science of transplantation advanced, the hospital added liver and heart transplantation in 1984.
