"We want to be the most trusted local financial institu- tion of choice," said Holt. "This is why our tagline is The One for Everyone. We actively reach out to all segments of the population, offering products and services that match their needs." To attract Gen-Y, Nutmeg offers a checking account for 13-17 year olds. This account pro- vides the convenience of an ATM/Debit card and other electronic services, while also offering the security and peace of mind that parents seek. Additionally, the credit union offers a first-time car buyer loan and a credit builder loan to help younger people begin building good credit, and has developed an educational outreach pro- gram within local schools. For the Hispanic community, they have a Spanish-language version of their website, and marketing materials available. The organization is also actively reaching out to the gay and lesbian commu- nity. "We mean the fact that we want to be there to make everyone feel comfortable when they walk in the door, and that's what it's ultimately all about," said Holt. One of the principles of credit unions is to serve a diverse demo- graphic, and Nutmeg exempli- fies this philosophy. "We want to reach out to the markets that a lot of people don't pay atten- tion to," Holt said. "We want to work with everyone." A credit union's purpose is to provide financial products and services to those who need them, at fair and competitive rates and prices. Nutmeg still adheres to this principle. In a time of economic turmoil brought on by careless money management and focus on profits — not people — this old-fashioned philosophy, coupled with Nutmeg's strong commitment to the local community, makes this credit union an oasis of principled financial management that everyone can put their trust in and rely on for life.
