BP-6 Hartford Business Journal • March 3, 2014 www.HartfordBusiness.com HBJBUSINESSPROFILES Connecticut Chambers of Commerce Provide Education on Reform Changes and New Healthcare Products to Its Members S tephen and Sally Glick founded Chamber Insurance Trust (CIT) in New Haven in 1992 in order to pro- vide an affordable portfolio of health and ancillary benefits — many exclusive — to chamber members. These programs are distributed through the local Connecticut Chambers of Commerce and their Chamber member insur- ance agents. Unifying all of the Connecticut Chambers of Commerce to use their combined buying power to create affordable benefit programs to its members was a major accomplish- ment for CIT. Today, the Chambers have an established Chamber Benefit Centers Leadership Cabinet inclusive of chamber executives across the state that governs the ben- efits program administered by Chamber Insurance Trust. The Cabinet and CIT work with insurance carriers and use member input on providing quality products and services along with the necessary education necessary to make the right choices for Chambers, chamber members and chamber member agents. "CIT has created and delivered health strategies that help provide quality benefits to chamber members through local chamber agents such as the Integrated Benefits Solution, Channel Integration, and Defined Contribution Programs," says Stephen Glick. The Affordable Care Act has changed the face of purchas- ing healthcare. CIT's Channel Integration program address- es the needs of the business community on how to blend the public health insurance marketplace (The Exchange) with private health insurance programs. "The market is confused on how to implement and weigh the decision on whether to stay with their private plan or move to the public Exchange and what are the advantages or disadvantages of both," states Glick. " "Our mission is for the community to know that CIT and your local chamber are a resource to help businesses navi- gate through the Affordable Care Act and how to blend the new public and private healthcare choices that best fit the member's business and their employees." "There are great opportunities available by join- ing your local Chamber. Our healthcare solutions are an integral advantage of that membership." CIT sets itself apart from the competition by supporting the local community, according to Glick. "CIT works through the Chambers of Com- merce marketplace with the help of local agents to distribute a comprehensive portfolio of products such as health, life, dental, Medicare Advantage, to name a few, that maintain local presence of ser- vices and programs," Glick says. "To complete the circle, members buy from local community experts which create a win-win for everyone." In New Haven, the Glicks are proud to support the arts community. They sit on the board of directors of the Shubert Theater, Long Wharf Theater, Arts and Ideas Festival, and the Greater New Haven Jewish Federation. Stephen created the first Healthcare Council, a model for more than 40 other councils within chambers through the state. In all, the Chamber community can use their chamber as a local resource to navigate through the health care reform in order to implement the appropriate long-term insurance solution for their business and employees.
