To that end, we collect very large donations of food from the food industry and other sources and distribute that food to food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and other agencies that serve people in need. Last year we distributed enough food for 12 million meals, including more than 6 million pounds of fresh produce. Yet that huge amount only covered one third of the need in our area. So we have launched a campaign to bridge that gap. We are engaging the entire community to increase the amount of available food while at the same time building programs that help people get back on their feet so they can buy their own food. This is the Movement to Solve Hunger, and we aim to fully close the meal gap in the next seven years. Goals • Distribute over 12 million meals worth of food to programs that serve low-income people. • Engage volunteers, the business community, and government officials in our work to end hunger. • Help enroll eligible low-income people in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. • Increase the self-sufficiency of low-income households through expanded support services and local collaborations. fundraisinG events/opportunities • A Turkey and Thirty (November) — Foodshare's Annual Turkey and Thirty food and funds drive benefits tens of thousands of local, working-poor families in need. A donation of a turkey and $30 ensures a traditional holiday meal as well as additional support to make it through the challenging winter months. For more information visit www.ATurkeyand30.org. • Walk Against Hunger (First Sunday in May) — This annual event attracts thousands of supporters rallying against hunger in both Hartford and Tolland Counties. The Walk is Connecticut's largest anti-hunger fundraising event and in 2014, walkers raised $650,000 for the fight against hunger! GivinG opportunities Foodshare depends heavily on both food and monetary donations. Since feeding such a large population requires food in bulk quantities, we look to our partners in the food industry for these types of donations; 77% of our food donations come from the food industry! Foodshare is also responsible for the shipping and delivery of this donated food. For that, we depend on the general public to cover the costs. Our spring, summer and fall direct mail campaigns support this effort. Every $30 raised is able to feed a hungry neighbor for an entire month. And all financial donations are 100% tax-deductible. volunteer opportunities Here at Foodshare, we rely on a whole community of donors, regional leaders, staff, advocates, and volunteers. In 2013, more than 4,000 individuals dedicated more than 37,000 hours of time to helping us achieve our goals. Their hard work resulted in more than 12 million meals worth of food being distributed in the most cost-effective way possible! Foodshare offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for those interested in taking a more hands-on approach to eliminating hunger: • Sort produce at the Regional Market or help grow food at the farm (a great group opportunity!) • Work as a member of our Volunteer Retail Pick-up Program • Ride along on a Mobile Foodshare truck • Speak at tabling events and educational program on our behalf • Volunteer in the office or help with program development • Serve on a committee, such as Fundraising, Events, PR or Communications • Become an advocate • Walk Against Hunger in the Spring or organize a Turkey and Thirty event in the Fall For more information please contact Edna Bailey at 860-286-9999 x126 or by email at ebailey@foodshare.org. We do that by engaging the entire community to increase access to food for people in need and build clients' self-sufficiency. " " I never thought I would be in this situation. It's a big wakeup call to find that you need help. I don't want to need help; I would rather provide it, but this is what happened. I wanted to tell you because not enough people appreciate what you do. If you guys weren't there, there are a lot of people who wouldn't be helped. It's wonderful to know you are there. It means the world to me. – Betsy from Windsor Board of directors
