Donors can create a fund, give to an established fund or join one of two giving circles. Currently, there are 1,063 named funds at the Foundation. The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving provides financial and other support to enable individuals and institutions to serve the community. The Foundation promotes informed charitable giving and participates actively in efforts to identify key community needs and opportunities, as well as the means to address them. Grant makinG As the steward of a sizable endowment designed to benefit Greater Hartford, the Hartford Foundation provides funds for high-impact grants to the community, while preserving the endowment's value into the future. In 2013, and in spite of a painstaking economic recovery, the Hartford Foundation awarded an unprecedented $29.5 million to a broad base of nonprofit organizations that serve education, families, the arts, housing, health and more. This amounts to an increase of about $2.5 million from 2012, bringing to $588.5 million the total the Foundation has awarded since its founding in 1925. The Foundation's grant making in 2013 occurred in these areas: • Education, 31 percent (includes nearly $1.3 million in support of college scholarships) • Family and social services, 26 percent • Community and economic development, 12 percent • Arts and culture, 11 percent • Health, 10 percent • General, 6 percent (includes grants for the environment and human rights) • Summer Programs, 4 percent Goals The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving is a catalyst for the Greater Hartford community. GivinG opportunities Individuals can create a fund or contribute to an existing fund that best suits their circumstances, goals for giving and desire for involvement. Unrestricted funds allow donors to authorize the Hartford Foundation to use the fund's income for grants wherever the greatest needs arise. Donor-advised funds allow donors to consult with the Foundation's experienced program staff for guidance on effective grants in their areas of interest and to recommend specific grants.
