Yet, the adoption of electric vehicles has been slow,
Reynolds said. Instead of spending money on stations
to drive demand, Connecticut should offer incentives
for people to buy electric vehicles on top of the federal
incentives, as states like California do.
Companies like The Hartford do their own program to
encourage sustainable commuting. The financial services
company challenged its Connecticut employees to get to
work in the most sustainable ways possible, including elec-
tric vehicles, carpooling, biking, public transit, and walking.
This is on top of other efforts by The Hartford that have
reduced its greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent since 2010,
reduced its internal paper use by 26 percent since 2012, and
provided more green products for customers like insurance
premium discounts for owners of electric vehicles.
"We keep pushing ourselves, and we keep finding new
ways to be more sustainable," said Jay Bruns, vice presi-
dent for public policy at The Hartford.
