Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good, and all that jazz. Unlike every other state, Con- necticut made the smart decision more than 40 years ago that burning its garbage for electricity was better than burying it in the ground. Today, waste-to-energy in Con- necticut faces a crisis of falling elec- tricity prices, competition for lower tipping fees, and increased recycling that will lower its fuel source. We look at how the industry can be saved for the next 40 years, and not replaced by a less progres- sive system of non-recycled waste management. Although this could apply to any issue of the Green Guide, this Spring edition is full of pragmatic people, ideas, and companies. Santa Fuel saw the writing on the wall nearly 30 years ago to diversify beyond heating oil delivery to become the billion dollar Santa Energy, which is this issue's ECOmpany. This is a path followed today by many heating oil companies looking to survive the state's switch to natural gas. Jessica Bailey, this issue's Green Warrior, helps businesses offset the high cost of expensive renewable and efficient energy projects through a special state financing program. Her secret to getting $20 million in deals done in less than a year: don't waste time creating the per- fect program, just get stuff done. There are plenty of lessons for businesses in the Green Guide, but the overall theme is: don't worry about finding perfect solutions in an imperfect world; just do what- ever works best in the situation you are given.
