58 Doing Business in Connecticut | 2014 >> Industry sPOtLIGHt ' Our goal is to keep offering whatever helps people engage in their health and provides long-term value. ' —Martha Wofford, Vice President and Head of Aetna's Consumer Platform one of the most downloaded health and fit- ness apps. In June 2013, Aetna launched its new consumer web platform, www.carepass.com. CarePass allows a consumer to connect vari- ous apps and other health data so that the information is combined in one place. "We have some of the most popular apps having to do with fitness, medication, sleep, medication adherence, and so on," Wofford said. "You can see data from all of these apps connected to your core health record — the meds you're on, the labs you've had. e intent here is to start to let consumers start to take control of their health." Anyone — not just Aetna members — can visit the CarePass website, create an account and start using all of the health and wellness apps available there. e CarePass catalog con- tains more than 20 health and fitness apps that, together, have been downloaded more than 100 million times. Aetna is also working with employers to help them maintain a happy, healthy and productive workforce. "Our goal is to keep offering what- ever helps people engage in their health and provides long-term value. It's an ongoing chal- lenge and opportunity to create good, easy-to- use tools for our clients," Wofford said. ❑ Industry sPOtLIGHt › Insurance & Financial Services PHOTO/COURTESY Eric Herbek, Bloomfield-based Cigna's vice president of product solutions and consumer health engagement. > Continued from page 56 Your nonprofit organization seen by 25,000+ C-level executives. The Foundation promotes informed charitable giving in order to expand the region's philanthropic resources and participates actively in efforts to identify important community needs and opportunities, as well as the means to address them. Goals Convene. Connect. Catalyze. At the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, we encourage transformative work that will enhance the quality of life for the people of the communities we serve. We think big, take appropriate risks, and invest for the long term. We can and must aim for larger, systemic solutions that assure everyone, especially our children, have the opportunity to succeed. The Foundation is uniquely positioned to convene, connect and catalyze. We bring people together, help them unite their efforts, and galvanize them to action through grantmaking, professional training and innovation. Collaboration is paramount in making the changes we need to make. As we said in our strategic plan — Accelerate Success — "Our problems are big … our community is bigger." It takes community action to ensure our community will prosper. The Foundation remains committed to be the community's foundation, continuing to help meet the needs of the 29-town region we serve through our responsive grantmaking, strategic priorities and the wide array of support services we offer our nonprofit partners. GrantmakinG The Hartford Foundation is the steward of a sizable endowment designed to benefit Greater Hartford. Our goal has always been to provide sufficient funds for grants to the community, while preserving the endowment's value into the future. Last year 1,847 grants totaling $27,095,572 were awarded, bringing to $559 million the total the Foundation has awarded since it was founded in 1925. Following the pattern of recent years, the Foundation's grantmaking in 2012 occurred in these areas: • Education, 29 percent. • Family and social service, 24 percent. • Arts and culture, 14 percent • Community and economic development, 11 percent. • Health, 10 percent. • Summer programs, 4 percent. • Other, 8 percent. GivinG opportunities Individuals can create a fund or contribute to an existing fund that best suits their circumstances, goals for giving, and desire for involvement. Through unrestricted funds, donors authorize the Foundation to use the fund's income for grants wherever the greatest needs arise. Donor-advised funds enable people to consult with the Foundation's program staff for guidance on effective grants in their areas of interest, and recommend specific grants. Donors can also create a fund to support their favorite organization(s), cause, community and/or population. Anyone who wants to help area students afford a college education can create an individual scholarship fund and can specify selection criteria and participate in the selection process. Or, they can contribute any amount to an endowment fund for general scholarships or for community college scholarships. With programs such as the Brighter Futures, Community Schools and Adult Literacy initiatives, Nonprofit Support Program, and the Hartford Area Child Care Collaborative, we support strategies that foster educational success for a stronger community. Our efforts succeed best when we bring people together to tackle the issues facing our population — philanthropists, community leaders and concerned citizens joining forces to help identify and address our most pressing problems. There are many ways to become involved — joining our two "giving circles," the Catalyst Endowment Fund or the Latino Endowment Fund, sharing your professional knowledge or contributing financially to an existing or new endowed fund. Together, we can make change where it will do the most good.
