120 Doing Business in Connecticut | 2014 L ocation, location, location. Located in the north central portion of the state — and centered within the powerful Boston-New York economic corridor — this metro area offers an opportunity for economic and business development success today and for generations to come. It also offers a lower-cost alternative and a high quality of place — recognized by national rankings — for its residents in ru- ral, suburban and urban settings. So what makes Hartford and the Capital Region such a viable place to do business? Hop in the car or on a train and you're on your way to Boston and New York City in less than two hours. The state and region are served by Bradley International Airport (BDL). It is the second largest air- port in New England and is ranked as one of the nation's fastest-growing airports as well. It offers non-stop flights to each time zone in the continental United States, including service to Los Angeles and Den- ver, both major western gateway hubs. In addition to passenger service, BDL is a major freight hub for the United States Postal Service, FedEx and UPS. Embraer and Bombardier operate regional general aviation centers at BDL. The Connecticut Capital Region has easy access to a large expanded labor pool. The Hartford labor market encom- passes Hartford, Tolland and Middlesex counties, plus more than 40,000 cars cross the state line from Western Massachusetts to the Hartford region each day, contrib- uting to our local economy. This effective- ly creates an available labor pool of more than 1 million people and a population of over 1.9 million. The region is also home to well- known Fortune 500 companies. Recognized as the Insurance Capital of the World, the area hosts head- quarters of companies such as The Hartford Financial Services Group, Travelers, CIGNA, Aetna, Magellan Health Services, ING, Prudential Retirement, UnitedHealth Care and The Phoenix Companies. United Technologies Corporation — one of the world leaders in the aerospace and building systems industries — is also headquartered in Hartford. Life science, encompassing healthcare and medical devices, is also an economic driver of the region. In 2012 Governor Dannel P. Malloy officially formed Bioscience Connecticut, investing $900 million in emerging tech- nology and leveraging the state's collective research and bioscience assets. Major new operations, such as the Jackson Laboratory, have joined other centers of excellence such as the University of Connecticut's Stem Cell and Genomic Institute, the Con- necticut Joint Replacement Institute and the Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation. And it's all about access — access to 35 percent of the U.S. buying power and 65 percent of the Canadian buying power within a day's drive; access to a highly educated workforce; and access to a qual- ity of life that includes an arts community that ranks in the top 6 percent nationwide. It is easy to see why many foreign-owned businesses have subsidiaries and operations in the Metro-Hartford area, companies like Ahlstrom, Henkel Loctite, LEGO Systems, Re- tail Brand Alliance and TRUMPF, for example. Consider a region which offers end- less opportunities to support your busi- ness goals while providing you and your employees with a rich quality of life and an abundance of arts, heritage, culture, sports, and entertainment venues to enjoy. Just a 40-minute drive south links you to Con- necticut's beautiful shoreline, and to the north are some of New England's highest mountains, perfect for skiing and hiking. There's something for everyone. SPONSORED REPORT Greater Capital Region Economic Development Regions in CT Connecticut's Capitol, located in Hartford Connecticut.
