They need to adjust to emerging industry trends and cater to new cus- tomer demands. And that is precisely what this year's crop of Business Champions have done over the years to stand out as some of the best private companies in Greater Hartford. The winners of our 12th annual Business Champions awards run the gamut from start-ups to seasoned compa- nies that have been around for decades. These companies not only pay attention to their bottom line, but also have a strong sense of community and social responsibility. Hartford Business Journal once again joined with the MetroHartford Alli- ance in producing this year's awards. In this special section, you'll meet some of the best and brightest, as deter- mined by our independent panel of judges. Nominees were judged on the basis of information they submitted covering several categories including innovation, community involvement, workforce practices, and year-over-year revenue growth. This year's overall winner is BL Companies, a Meriden professional ser- vices firm that provides integrated architecture, engineering, environmental, and related services to public and private clients for land development, build- ing design, and infrastructure projects. The company's decision to become 100 percent employee-owned has paid dividends in building workers' trust and developing leaders. This is the second straight year BL Companies has been honored; last year it won the workforce practices category. The winner in the revenue category is Numotion in Rocky Hill. The custom wheelchair and rehab and mobility equipment supplier has grown aggressive- ly in recent years through acquisitions and organic growth that has expanded its footprint to 115 locations in 41 states. Windsor Marketing Group topped the workforce practices category. Its family work environment and sustainability plat- form helps keep employees connected as a team. Manchester's Fichman Eye Center took home top honors for community involvement. President Richard A. Fichman, who pioneered Lasik eye surgery, is trying to lead a resur- gence in Hartford's Upper Albany neighborhood, home to one of the company's four eye centers. ACT Group of Cromwell and Wallingford's CyVek jointly won the innovation category. ACT Group, a repeat winner from last year, recently underwent a major rebranding, while CyVek is preparing to bring its groundbreaking biochemical test machine to market. Finally, Premier Accounting Group LLC of Marlborough is the best new start-up, after quickly becoming a formidable player in the outsourced book- keeping and accounting services industry. Congratulations to each of our winners and every other company that took the challenge of competing in this year's Business Champions. As always, we hope you'll find these stories inspirational, educational and motivational. ★ Greg Bordonaro, Editor, Hartford Business Journal CONTENTS Bl companies inc. Overall Winner PG.
