78 Hartford Business Journal • November 26, 2012 www.HartfordBusiness.com Celebrating 20 Years of Business News by the Hartford Business Journal O ver the years, the Hartford Business Journal has honored many of the best and brightest in the region. Here is a sam- pling of our stars: NaNcy BerNsteiN Lifetime Achievement Award, 2010 For 12 years, Nancy Bernstein has been president and CEO of Women's Health Connecticut, which supports a network of over 200 physicians and other health care professionals. It is the major piece of Women's Health USA, an entre- preneurial enterprise designed to transform the independent practice of medicine into a business alliance among doc- tors, insurers, business execu- tives, and, presumably, satis- fied patients. A profile of her in the Hart- ford Business Journal when she received her award in 2010 said, "Building the Women's Health organization has been a complex human resources chore, says Bernstein, who is on the lookout for every skill from steely bottom-line disci- pline to the squishy kind of compassion that assures the patient on the other end of the phone hears a sympathetic voice." Prior to joining Women's Health, Bernstein held management posi- tions at community and academic hospitals and health systems in the Northeast and Midwest. She previously served or currently serves on the boards of Leadership Greater Hartford, Community Health Chari- ties, Connecticut Center for Primary Care and United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. evaN s. DoBelle Business Person of the Year, 1996 While Evan Dobelle's tenure as president of Trinity College was relatively short (1995 to 2001) was relatively short, he has left a last- ing impact on Hartford. His award as Business Person of the Year came because of his "vision and substantial effort" in revitalizing the "poor blighted neighbor- hoods that surround the elite academic institution," accord- ing to an account at the time in the Hartford Business Journal. The paper credited Dobelle, an academic with experience in public policy and urban plan- ning as being "a key figure in orchestrating a $175 million business deal" incorporating both private and public funds to create the "Learning Corri- dor" in a 15-square-block adja- cent to the campus. 20 leaders among those honored In further recognition of his work while at Trinity, The New Eng- land Council named him New Englander of the Year in 1999. That same year, he was inducted into the Boys and Girls Clubs of America National Hall of Fame at ceremonies in San Diego. Since leaving Hartford, Dobelle has been president of the Univer- sity of Hawaii, the New England Board of Higher Education and now Westfield State University in Massachusetts. Douglas evaNs Forty Under 40, 1997 and 1999 Douglas Evans was managing director The Bushnell from 1990 to 2000 during a period of great expansion. When he left to become managing director of The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, Evans was in the midst of the construction of The Belding Theater, which opened in the fall of 2001, adjacent to the main Bushnell Theater. As recounted in the Hart- ford Business Journal when receiving his second Forty Under 40 award, "Since Evans was hired to be The Bushnell's leader, things have improved greatly. And the improvement isn't about to stop." He said "When I came here there were 189,000 people that annually came to the hall. Now it's almost 500,000 people a year." Evans was also able to lead a successful $10 million campaign to open the Belding Theater. Matt Fleury Forty Under 40, 2002 When Matt Fleury was named a member of the Forty Under 40 Class of 2002, at the age of 37, he was director, marketing and commu- nications chair of the Capital City Economic Development Authority/ The Hartford Image Project.
