At the time, there was no central place to care for the injured, but that would soon change. The accident galvanized the community, paving the way for Hartford Hospital, the first general acute care hospital in the area. More than 150 years later, Hartford Hospital is now one of the largest teaching hospitals and tertiary care centers in all of New England, with more top-ranked phy- sicians than any other area hospital. It is at the center of clinical research, funded by annual grants of more than $14 million. It was Hartford Hospital that brought robotic surgery to Connecticut. Years later, the hospital has become New England's second busiest surgical practice, second only to Mass General in Boston. Expert physicians perform more minimally invasive surgery than any other hospital in the region. Hartford Hospital houses the area's only Level 1 Trauma Center. It owns and oper- ates LIFE STAR, the state's critical care helicopter service, which has been saving lives since 1985. Medical education has changed dramatically over the years, and Hartford Hospital has been at the forefront, creating the area's first Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation (CESI). At CESI, health care workers come from across the world learn how to help and heal patients through simulat- ed, real-world circumstances, so they will be better prepared when a real emergency unfolds. Hartford Hospital's major cen- ters include: Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center The Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center is a nationally-recognized cancer center and one of the larg- est, most comprehensive in the Northeast, offering the latest in technology and multidisciplinary care. Henry Low Heart Center The Henry Low Heart Center is dedicated to the care of the heart and all its com- plexities, providing outstanding multi-disciplinary cardiovascular programs. The center is named for Dr. Henry Low, a pioneering cardiac surgeon who performed the first successful heart transplant operation in Connecticut in 1984. Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery The team at Hartford Hospital has more experience in robotic and minimally inva- sive surgery than any other hospital in the region. The hospital originated techniques that are now used worldwide, reducing bleeding, pain, internal scarring, hospital stay and recovery time. Neurosciences Hartford Hospital is a leader of neurological care in the region. It is one of the only hospitals in the area offering cutting edge options like awake brain surgery, tumor removal through the nose and a new Comprehensive Epilepsy Center inpatient unit. The Stroke Center The Stroke Center has become the most comprehensive stroke clinic in the area with specialized care available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is a regional leader in patient care, education and clinical research, and was the first Primary Stroke Center certified by the Joint Commission in New England. The Spine Center Hartford Hospital performs more inpatient spinal procedures than any other hos- pital in the state. Surgeons at Hartford Hospital also have the O-arm® Surgical Imag- ing System which provides spinal surgeons with GPS precision during procedures, which means less invasive surgery and shorter recuperation time for patients. Institute of Living The Institute was one of the first mental health centers in the United States — and the first hospital of any kind in Connecticut. Today, it is a leader in patient care, research and education in the fields of behavioral, psychiatric and addiction disorders. The Transplant Program Hartford Hospital is one of only two transplant centers in Connecticut and the only hospital in the state offering ventricular assist device destination therapy, another option for patients with advanced heart failure. Hartford Hospital's first kidney trans- plant was performed on March 25, 1971. Women's Health Services Hartford Hospital is committed to the comprehensive health care of women, at every stage of a woman's life to ensure the best possible care, ranging from routine wellness to the very latest treatments for high-risk pregnancies, pelvic floor disorders and gynecologic cancers. The Joint Center The Total Joint Center is a regional leader in joint replacement as experienced teams provide excellent care in addition to patient education and post-operative physical therapy. Surgical Weight Loss Center The Surgical Weight Loss Center at Hartford Hospital is the only hospi- tal in Connecticut to be des- ignated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by both the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. Gastroenterology From routine screen- ings and common tests to advanced procedures and complex cases, Hartford Hospital offers the expert diagnostic and treatment capabilities that referring physi- cians demand, combined with the compassionate care every patient deserves. Colorectal Surgery There has been a revolution in the past 15 years in colorectal surgery and Hartford Hospital surgeons have led the charge. Operations that used to require lengthy, open incisions can now be performed using just a three-inch incision, plus tiny openings for a camera and instruments. Hartford Hospital.
