6 Hartford Business Journal•November26,2012 www.HartfordBusiness.com Celebrating 20 Years of Business News Hartford Business Journal And Hartford Hospital Work Together To Support Capitol City An Exciting Time For TD Bank To Be Growing In Downtown Hartford S ince its founding 20 years ago, the Hartford Business Journal, Hartford's most-influential business publication, has been an important asset to the city and the business community. The publication has been a strong sup- porter of the city's revitalization efforts and has provided not only important information but also great insights. Over the past 20 years, Hartford Hospital also has been committed to Hartford and its revitalization and has continued to strengthen our relationships with the city and the business community. Hartford and Hartford Hospital have been strongly linked throughout our long histories. The people of Hartford founded Hartford Hospital 158 years ago to provide care and service to the community. We have stayed true to that mission, providing more than $98 million in community benefit and safety net services in 2011 and working with the city and numerous agencies to make Hartford a bet- ter place to live and work. We provide outpatient clinics, community outreach, medical screenings and other services to enhance the health and well being of community members and improve the quality of life. Hartford Hospital has been privileged to play a role in working to stimulate the capital city's economy for the benefit of its residents, as well as the benefit of the state. We are engaged with the Metro Hartford Alliance in those efforts and have implemented other initiatives, including providing grants to employees to encourage them to buy homes in the city, participating in Leadership Greater Hartford to mentor the leaders who will continue our drive to strengthen our communities, and contributing to Southside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance to provide affordable housing and to Hartford's Learning Corridor to improve the future outlook for local students.Hartford Hospital also is the city's largest employer, with more than 7,000 employees, many of whom use city services and establishments. Hartford and Hartford Hospital have grown together. While we are very conscious that we are Hartford's community hospital, we also are an expand- ing research and medical center that has achieved national and international recognition for the high-quality, innovative care and training we provide. This recognition is an economic driver for the city, bringing industries and visitors to the area. Our Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation (CESI) is a world-renowned simulation training center that attracts medical personnel from around the world, as well as industry partners. CESI has trained more than 6,000 medical personnel since it opened in 2010and recently received $15 million in state funding to expand an additional 40,000 square feet, which will further enhance the center's reputation and attract more visitors and trainees to the city and the state. Hartford Hospital and the city of Hartford are tightly intertwined and always will maintain a strong bond. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our community members and build the city's — and the state's — reputations as centers of technology; science; and innovative, integrated high-quality health care. We look forward to our continued work together. T D Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank, has been a staple in the Greater Hartford area for many years. That's why we are extremely excited to part- ner with the Hartford Business Journal on celebrating 20 Years of Business. What a vibrant community to have our employees live and work in. At a time when many banks scaled back from the market, TD Bank bucked the trend. Throughout the downturn, the Bank continued to lend to businesses, created jobs, and added new locations along the East Coast. In fact, we recently expanded our presence in West Hartford and opened a new Store in Bishops Corner. We have also opened our new Regional Commercial Office in Downtown Hartford and are excited to announce that our retail Store will be relocating to 203 Trumbull Street at the beginning of December. TD Bank is one of the 10 largest banks in the United States, delivering full-scale solutions to nearly 8 million customers from Maine to Florida. TD Bank offers customers an array of retail, small business and commercial banking products with legendary service and unparalleled convenience. We are a financially strong, well-capitalized and committed banking partner for businesses and individu- als alike, with more than 1,299 convenient locations and 1,880 TD Bank-owned ATMs. The Bank's 28,000 diverse employees work in unison to offer exceptional products and services that are easy to use and easy to understand. TD Bank continues to be a market leader in commercial and small business lending, through traditional loans and lines of credit, specialty financing, and government-backed small business loan programs. As a bank of local lenders making local loans, local decision-making ensures that the unique challenges and opportunities of each market are understood and considered. TD Bank is committed to helping businesses of all sizes grow and be successful, and our current message to business is, "We're here to lend, when you're ready to borrow." We understand what it takes to be around for 20 years and longer! TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank, is a financially strong, committed banking part- ner for businesses and individuals alike. In fact, TD Bank Group is one of the most financially sound banks in North America and one of the few banks in the world rated Aaa by Moody's (highest quality rating). Obtaining accolades such as being ranked #4 on Bloomberg Markets' list of the World's Strongest Banks (May 2012), ranked #1 on the list of North America's Safest Banks, and #11 on the list of the World's Safest Banks, by Global Finance Magazine (August 2012), is a great testament to the types of businesses Greater Hartford is attracting and keeping. What an exciting time for TD Bank to be growing in Downtown Hartford and throughout the Greater Hartford region. As a bank, we know there is great oppor- tunity in the Hartford area to continue to attract workforce talent and expand its economic vitality through higher education, retail shopping, restaurants and small businesses alike. Congratulations to the Hartford Business Journal on celebrating 20 success- ful years! We look forward to the next 20 years. Jeffrey A. Flaks President and CEO Hartford Hospital Michael J.
