(NYSE: BSX) has initiated a clinical trial to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Lotus Valve System, designed to treat patients with severe aortic stenosis, a condition that prevents the aorta from opening fully. The trial, known as REPRISE III, will involve patients at high risk for surgical valve replacement who could be treated instead by the device, according to BSX. A clinical team led by Dr. Ted E. Feld- man of NorthShore University Health- System in Evanston, Ill., implanted the first three Lotus Valve Systems at Evanston Hospital, BSX said. ExaGrid patent award to help data deduplication effort ExaGrid Systems of Westborough said it's been awarded a new patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which will help the company advance its adaptive deduplication technology. The patent, known as the "Method and Apparatus for Content-Aware and Adaptive Deduplication," is used to help avoid unnecessary processes that result in lengthy data backup windows, according to a company statement. Meanwhile, the company, which considers Hopkinton-based IT storage giant EMC its largest competitor, said it recently added its 2,000th customer, a "huge accomplishment," according to CEO Bill Andrews. SanDisk Marlbrough R&D facility up and running Milpitas, Calif.-based SanDisk opened a new 60,000-square-foot research and development facility in Marlborough with a ceremony featur- ing the company's co-founder and local officials. The site at Solomon Pond Office Park contains 15,000 square feet of laboratory facilities. The company invested $14.5 million to lease and upgrade the building at 200 Donald Lynch Blvd. The ceremony was hosted by company co-founder, president and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, along with other company executives. City and state officials were also in attendance. Court victory for AMSC in Chinese infringement case Devens-based AMSC said it has bro- ken through another roadblock in the Chinese court system in the company's trade infringement battle with a former customer. The energy technology man- ufacturer took Sinovel to court in 2011, alleging that the Chinese company used a portion of AMSC's wind turbine con- trol software source code that AMSC developed for Sinovel's 1.5-MW wind turbines. AMSC is seeking approxi- mately $450 million in monetary dam- ages as well as $6.2 million against the company in a copyright infringement case. In a statement, AMSC said the Beijing Higher People's Court upheld AMSC's position by rejecting Sinovel's appeal to transfer the case to the Beijing Arbitration Commission. BSX gets go-ahead to sell tremor treatment system Marlborough-based Boston Scientific Corp. (BSX) received approval to sell its system designed to treat tremor disor- ders in the European Union, the com- pany announced. The EU awarded CE Mark, a designation allowing products to move freely through the EU's mem- ber countries, for BSX's Vercise Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) System. The system treats the most common form of tremor, known as essential tremor (ET), among other tremor disorders. Launched in 2012, the DBS system is still undergoing clinical trials and is not yet available for sale in the U.S. In addition to Europe, it is available for sale in Israel, Australia and some Latin American countries.
