Tenet Healthcare of Dallas bought Vanguard Health Systems in
October for $4.3 billion, which included the assumption of $2.5
billion in Vanguard debt. e deal helped Tenet scale up in a
changing industry environment with increasing cost pressures.
w UMass Memorial helm changes
Eric Dickson took over as CEO of the parent organization in
February as John O'Brien retired. Several months later, Patrick
Muldoon of HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster took a simi-
lar role at UMass Memorial Medical Center.
w The effects of health care reform
Most hospitals in the area got a better handle on patient readmis-
sions in 2013, losing less Medicare and Medicaid revenue than
they lost last year. Readmission penalties are a part of the Afford-
able Care Act, which seeks, in part, to lower health care costs.
