I f any one person can take much of the credit for lots of young people being in Worcester's downtown, it would be Charlie Monahan. Ever since locating the Worcester campus of MCPHS (for- merly Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences) in a long-underutilized office building on Foster Street in 2002, the Worcester native has led an almost one-man eco- nomic jump-start of the city's much- maligned urban core. In the last decade, MCPHS has expanded its $85-million Worcester campus to include programs in phar- macy, physician assistant studies, nurs- ing and physical therapy. Located at 19, 25 and 40 Foster St., 28 Mechanic St. and 10 Lincoln Sq., the Worcester cam- pus serves about 1,300 students, who represent one-fifth of the school's total population. And about 1,000 of the Worcester students are housed on cam- pus, including at the site of the former Crowne Plaza Hotel at Lincoln Square. For MCPHS, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2013, community service has been a hallmark of its Worcester citizenship. Through an innovative service-learning program, students perform community service at public schools, neighborhood health centers, local organizations and at health-related events. In addition, the Eye & Vision Center offers eye and vision care and the Forsyth Dental Hygiene Clinic offers low-cost, compre- hensive dental care to patients in Worcester and surrounding communi- ties. Both facilities are at 10 Lincoln Sq., once the site of the Crowne Plaza Hotel. MCPHS University 7 MCPHS University has been a boost for Worcester's downtown, especially in taking over the former Crowne Plaza Hotel. 25 YEARS: IMPACTFUL COMPANIES >> Continued on Page 22 A Powerful Presence in Central Massachusetts For advertising information contact: Mark Murray, Associate Publisher 508.755.8004 x227 m @wbjournal.com The Worcester Business Journal A Fact of Business Life in Central Mass! murray 7
